WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said a library police officer died Thursday afternoon after a retired police lieutenant shot and killed her in the Anacostia Library.

MPD said the retired lieutenant was conducting training at the library, located at 1800 Good Hope Rd. SE. At the end of the training, the retired lieutenant fired a gun. The bullet hit the library police officer.

Medics took her to the hospital where she died.

Other library police officers, as well as the retired lieutenant, were being interviewed late Thursday afternoon.

MPD said it was working with its partners at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia in the investigation into exactly what happened.

“It’s not good practice to do that,” Contee said.

Duh.

“Forgot it was a loaded weapon”

What’s that 1st rule of handling a firearm again?

Notice that neither tha name of the RPO nor the Library LEO
have been published, WTF?

The cops in Washington have killed Ashlee Babbittm, and a librarian and both gettting off without a consequence?

This is what happens when cops are re-imagined as social workers.

Has the shooter’s name been released? It took months or weeks for Byrd to be publicly ID’d.

Batons are not even as dangerous as a well-designed pointy stick: perhaps the authorities find it necessary to leverage fire power in anything more serious than defense against grapes.

As Batons are more dangerous than a banana, and there already is popular precedent for authorities to use lethal force in defense against a banana, even in training, I see no reason why we should expect significant action against the trainer.

Banana Republic.

Why would he use live ammo for a training exercise in a library?

Seems like overkill.

(pun intended)

I work in a relatively small urban public library that has enough issues with theft and patron/staff harassment we also use security contracted through the state police. More than schools I’m sure. Officer induced incidences not so much. Can’t imagine what larger systems go though keeping everyone comfortable and safe on a daily basis.

My local Social Security Administration office has an armed guard on duty. How do I know? I got thrown out of the office for questioning why my annual COL adjustment was $1 per month or $12 per year short. Never did get an answer even after writing letters to my senators and congressman.

Most likely the student asked for one more demonstration.

Trainer had already packed up.

Put his loaded gun back on. Forgot it was a loaded weapon.

Yes, that is how it happens.

It is why the safety rules have multiple backups.

Of course, there might have been another problem. We will eventually know the details.

Who would want to go around D.C., unarmed?
