The first time Kelly Wilcox drove her 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan to the food pantry near her home in Payson, Utah, she noticed one thing right away that surprised her: newer models of Toyota and Honda sedans and minivans. “I saw a bunch of other people with cars like mine, who had kids in cars,” she said.
The mother of four young sons hadn’t known what to expect when she made that initial trip to Tabitha’s Way Local Food Pantry this spring. She did know she needed help. Her husband had lost his job. He soon found a new job as an account manager, but with inflation it hasn’t been enough. “We still cannot keep up with the bills,” said Ms. Wilcox, 35. To keep her children fed this summer, she has visited the pantry regularly and said that barring a change, like a drop in food prices or a raise for her husband, it will be necessary for the foreseeable future.
ADVERTISEMENT Tabitha’s Way’s location in Spanish Fork, Utah, a town of about 44,000 outside Provo, used to serve roughly 130 families each week, offering essentials like fresh produce and baby formula. This year — serving people like Ms. Wilcox and her family, whose paychecks are not going far enough — that number has climbed above 200.
The increase in food insecurity is not about a sudden wave of joblessness as it was when the economy ground to a halt in 2020 in the first wave of the pandemic. It is about inflation — higher prices for housing, gas and especially food. According to the last report on consumer prices, the cost of food increased 10.4 percent from a year earlier, the largest 12-month increase since 1981.

Hey those Mansions for Zelensky aren’t just going to build themselves.
Let’s go Brandon!
Especially hard hit are the millennials who order Fast Food delivered as higher gas prices have increased delivery costs as well. I mean, how can we expect them to get buy when their delivered lunch costs $25? You can't expect them to spend half that for a whole week of cold cuts and make their own lunch.
No wonder so many people are raising chickens again!

I wouldn’t even put him in the top 5. He’s malicious, but incompetent, so he still can’t do as much damage as many of other other presidents who were both malicious and competent.
This is just the beginning. The deliberate collapse of food and fuel production continues apace. We’re basically eating what amounts to our seed corn now. Once the existing supplies are gone, it’s hello Turnip Winter.
that’s certainly true.....all the “poor” folks begging on the highway are pretty hefty.
I've always said that America has the richest poor people in the world.
This is why I grow my own and can it.
Yeah you said it better than I did.
On a side note, don’t know how many times I’ve seen a minority on local news complaining about rent or food prices etc and in the background there’s a 65” flat-screen tv... really?
SMH
I helped a guy I hired for my business to move from one home to another . When we got down to a little pantry room about 12 by 16 feet he said just leave all that there . I can go to the food banks and replace it in a couple of weeks . There was everything you could imagine in that room stacked high and deep . Spam , corn, beans ,coffee, you name it . It was there . He and his whole family were fat and very well fed . The guys in the shop called him The Round Clown . He was not very popular . Always bumming money and never once paid anyone back . They learned quick not to loan him anything . Just sitting outside the local Meijers store while the wife shops I watch as the average American waddles in and out . I predict we will see some hungry Americans one day but I’m not believing it right now .
Nonsense.
In L.A. there are more than 500 LA foodbank churches which gives out food and clothing almost every day. Case in point?
The one on Saturdays in Hollywood. I lined twice for research for a script. They gave away eggs, canned goods, frozen meat, bread, fruits and vegetables, and are not expired from Krogers, Vons, Albertsons. Even pastries from Trader joe’s which i know costs $8 (yeah I buy them so I know)
That’s why homeless tent cities are sprouting beside churches because they feed these clowns. If there really was hunger, how come there are MORE tents and not corpses?
Can’t afford food but can afford high car payments, able to get their nails and hair done up pretty.
If we had some eggs we could have bacon and eggs for breakfast if we had some bacon.
How’s that saying go...you find out who’s been swimming naked when the tide goes out.

2017 is newer than my wife’s car....the inability for people to manage money and to go into credit debt has always baffled me.
Of the countless life lessons my parents taught me one was if you can’t afford it......DO WITHOUT.
The want of money material objects has probably ruined as many lives as probably anything else.
And we’re letting hundreds of thousands of illegals pour across our borders to be fed by American TAXPAYERS!!
Our poorest people are actually the most likely to be obese, which is like something out of a 1930s dystopian sci-fi novel.
Freegards
When one is poor they generally eat low-quality fattening foods, not an expensive salad and a piece of Salmon.
The rich tend to eat pricier lean foods, they don’t use fillers like starches and hamburger helper, and fatty cheap cuts and proteins.
