Monday on “CNN Newsroom,” network medical analyst Dr. Leana Wen called on the United States to “declare a state of emergency” over the monkeypox outbreak.
Last week, the World Health Organization advised gay and bisexual men to reduce their number of sexual partners “for the moment” to prevent the spread of the virus.
Wen said declaring a state of emergency would “allow the Biden administration to appoint a monkeypox czar” and allow for more resources to be put into combatting the spread.

Unlike any other sexually transmitted disease, there are vaccines to prevent it. What worries me is that it is a zoonosis. I worry about it getting into wild animals where it is impossible to prevent its spread. I'm afraid we might have to start vaccinating our pets just as we have to vaccinate them against Rabies.

Pfizer Board member, Dr. Scott Gottlieb, warned that the United States lacks federal infrastructure capable of handling public health emergencies such as monkeypox.
“Now if monkeypox has gained a permanent foothold in the United States and becomes an endemic virus that joins our circulating repertoire of pathogens, it would be one of the worst public health failures in modern times.” , not only because of the pain and distress of the disease, but also because it was so avoidable,” the former Food and Drug Administration chief wrote and op-ed for new York Times, “Our flaws extend beyond political decision-making to the agencies tasked with protecting us from these threats.”
