CHICAGO -- A 13-year-old boy was shot Friday after he and at least three others tried to break into a parked vehicle in Hyde Park on the South Side, police said.
About 8 p.m., the boy was among "four to five" men who were trying to breach a parked car in the 1100 block of East 52nd Street when the vehicle's owner, a 34-year-old woman, confronted the group, Chicago police said.
One of the men brandished a handgun, but the woman, who possesses a valid concealed carry license, fired her gun and struck the 13-year-old in the neck, police said.
The boy was transported to Comer Children's Hospital in fair condition, police said.
The other men fled the scene.

You can breach a rampart and a whale breaches when it leaps out or partly out of the water.
I suspect that the lady did not want to sit there for an hour watching her car being robbed while 400 policemen stood by collecting paychecks.
A boy doing a man’s job.
One of the ‘men’ brandished a handgun. That was enough for me.
If he wants to play adult criminal, he runs the risk of adult crime.
I have no pity for the punk.
A concealed carry permit is not a badge. Yes, walk away, call the police, and wait for nothing to happen from the feckless Chicago cops.
Now she’s facing thousands in legal bills at best, jail time at worst.
He lived. His singing voice may be damaged.
I’ll bet he won’t do that any more.
When you do get in court, and you will with that attitude, you will find that your feelings do not matter.
If you happen to draw a hanging judge and a prosecutor with political ambition, and most of them do, you will find that they prosecute and sentence based on whether you could have reasonably and safely avoided the confrontation.
I am not arguing that the law is right, I am arguing that it is not enough to know the law. You need to know how the law is interpreted in your area.
In my county, within 10 miles of so from my home, almost the exact same event occurred. The sheriff kept the shooter from being prosecuted.
In the county south of here, the shooter would have been tried and most likely convicted, as were the shooters in every similar case.
So in reality a concealed carry does not make us cops and we need to be very cautious not to get trapped by a malicious prosecutor.
Even if a pistol had not been brandished by one of the men, there were four or five of them. If if there were only one, she was in danger of serious bodily harm. And she had the right to confront a man trying to steal her car.
So she has the right to shoot one male threatening her in any way and/or acting like he’s going to hurt her. In essence, to save his own life, he should leave upon being confronted.
Will it work out in court for her? Depends on the neighborhood and judge or jurors.
And if he didn’t know before, he knows now that his confederates will scatter like rabbits.
Stealing a car SHOULD be a death sentence. Same as stealing a horse. The thief never knows how important that car is to the owner. Might be waiting to take someone to a hospital. Might have someone’s critical meds inside.
I recall a story an old Wyoming sheriff told me about a pickup thief who was on trial for stealing the only vehicle a young rancher had to get his pregnant wife to the hospital. In court the judge asked the rancher what his charge was. The reply was “that man stole my horse.” The thief thot it was funny but his lawyer went white. Wyoming still had horse thief hanging at the time. They didn’t hang him but the punk got 25 years to think it over.
We have to take the fun and profit out of vehicle stealing. One of my trucks has a tailgate sticker that says: Want to find out if there’s life after death-—screw with this truck and find out.
There might be some paperwork but stealing hereabouts is hazardous. semper fi
One of my maternal grandmother's relatives was the victim of horse theft back in the days when horses were both farm equipment and transportation, and horse stealing was big money. Tradition is that he was among the 200 or so "regulators" who eventually apprehended the two men responsible and duly tried, convicted and hung them. A third man was warned to leave the county and never return. Organized horse thievery in that township ended "forthwith," as they say.

She was at risk. It sounds like she might have hit someone other than the one with the handgun.
Sounds like she was at risk. They waved a handgun at her. She had a reasonable expectation that they might use it.
How do we know they identified as male?
This reporter is sexist.

“One of the men brandished a handgun”
It’s a good shoot on her part.
She is probably black too if on the Southside. You need one for protection there.
