CHICAGO -- A 13-year-old boy was shot Friday after he and at least three others tried to break into a parked vehicle in Hyde Park on the South Side, police said.

About 8 p.m., the boy was among "four to five" men who were trying to breach a parked car in the 1100 block of East 52nd Street when the vehicle's owner, a 34-year-old woman, confronted the group, Chicago police said.

One of the men brandished a handgun, but the woman, who possesses a valid concealed carry license, fired her gun and struck the 13-year-old in the neck, police said.

The boy was transported to Comer Children's Hospital in fair condition, police said.

The other men fled the scene.

Since she wasn’t at risk things will not go well for her.

I think the kid was already indoctrinated into the gang at that point.

Once there was an effort to reduce gangs but that city doesn’t care now.

“Since she wasn鈥檛 at risk things will not go well for her.”

One of the perps pulled a gun on her. Of course, he will claim he pulled it in self-defense. It’s Chicago, so he’ll walk and she won’t.

She was stupid to confront the group, but if as the article said one of the group brandished a handgun, then she was justified in defending herself.

It鈥檚 ABC. So of course the title doesn鈥檛 match the story. The title implies that the lady was protecting some car. But in the article we learn that one of the thieves was armed, and brandished a gun.

Defending your life is a bit different than protecting a car.

The DA could take the position that upon seeing the situation, she should have backed off to a safe place and called the cops.

Actually that is the law in most jurisdictions.

The DA could make the case that until she challenged the thieves, she was in no danger.

Not that I agree with it, but a strict interpretation of the law results in that conclusion.

It was her car. What do you suggest she have done. Call the police?
