The Sion, a five-person family car covered completely in solar panels, should enter production in the second half of 2023, the German start-up said Monday. Following years of development, Sono Motors is now building a fleet of test vehicles before beginning mass production.

Does the word “sion” translate from German to mean “car no go far” or “spontaneous combustion”? What lunatic would put his or her family in that car and drive it on a rainy day. Then again Germans always deserve to suffer.

The large black Sion hatchbacks are covered with 456 solar cells which allow it to generate on average enough electricity over a week to power the car 112 kilometres (70 miles).

That works out to 10 miles of range per day on solar.

That might be enough power to keep the interior cool (or warm) while parked during the day without using up range, but not enough to make a difference in your daily commute.

Oh, and forget parking in a garage or parking structure, unless you get a roof spot.

I prefer the idea of the windmill on the top of EV’s, generating electricity from the wind caused by driving.
