I’ve never had an abortion. But I’ve had a lot of sex. And when I’ve been asked what my “number” is by friends or lovers, I laughed it off because I hadn’t ever considered counting a complete tally of partners.
But today I realize the privilege that comes with not really knowing how many different men I’ve slept with. That’s because I lived during a time when I was lucky enough to be able to separate my sex life from the rest of me. To put sex into a little box that I only accessed when the time was right. I was not weighed down by fears of pregnancy. I was bolstered by rights that I knew would protect me should things not go as planned.
Now, I recognize that the number of sex partners I’ve had defines an era and a mentality that we are all at risk of losing. I’ve been lucky enough to have slept with at least 17 men in my 41 years of life, and I think it might mean something positive that I’m not sure if there were more.
Why keep track? Because if it doesn’t matter to me, it shouldn’t matter at all. That’s the freedom and privilege of having had access to abortion and contraception for my entire adult life.
Talking about abortion access must come in many forms. This has now become a war, and battles for regaining our constitutional rights as women must become manifest on the streets, on the page, and in conversation.

You folks are too judgmental. 17 partners in 24 years amounts to less than one per year average. One at a time is not a slut. A slut will do it with anyone BUT YOU. I see too much anger here. What’s wrong with enjoying life? She’s not alone in those numbers. Granted it can be dangerous but too many of you think they’re guilty of engaging in behavior you’ll have to clean up.
Any woman who puts herself out there will find plenty of takers. The men? You have to buy the cow. Milk is not free and even then you won’t get it. Sad state of affairs. Don’t get so angry.

Women like it just as much as men. If it takes 2 men just make sure you get enough. I’ve had 2 that were really into sex. I shoda been more patient as they didn’t turn me on in other areas. Gotta admit the sex was great.
Yes, I look at a thread like this hoping to see testimonies similar to my wife’s and mine. The contentment of being in a happy marriage is priceless! I pity that woman. But I can witness that I was living an unhappy dating life, because I wanted a love that would last, and I knew without experiencing it that a sexual encounter would be over in minutes. And I certainly didn’t want an std.
Every guy should have a mom like I had. In that talk to me, she stressed that I respect myself AND the young lady I’m with. To not let myself get talked into something I would regret later. She was VERY emphatic that I not take advantage of a girl, saying if she found out, she would slap me HARD!
Had a coworker years ago who hooked up with 2-3 a week, and this before internet sites. She was into party drugs and clubs of different types to expand her "market".
She herself was surprised that she wasn't dead.
I’m betting the 17 number is from 1 night of drug/alcohol fueled partying, that someone told her about the next day.
No one has even talked about anything to do with contraception. No one. Typical hysterical over-reaction. And as for the author.... well, she has gotten around.

And 45 that she remembers - double that and you are likely close. But she misses the point - women still have complete control over their pregnancy - just get on one of the dozens of options for contraceptives as directed. Really not that hard. That cuts down on pregnancies by 99-99.9%.
