Displaying Funeral Flag

Posted on 07/24/2022 12:09:18 PM PDT by Mean Daddy

My father was a Korean Vet and passed away several weeks ago. He was buried with military honors so I bought a nice, 5x9 display case. Unfortunately the flag is too thick on one end to put the back on the display case.

Was thinking about a couple options but open to other ideas. First, contact the local VFW and see if they can refold it so it sits flatter and doesn't have a lump on one corner or try pressing the flag with a couple boards and some books. I checked the box that the case came in and it says it's for a 5x9 flag. The front is glass so & engraved with my father's information so trying to be careful not forcing it in.

Does a folded flag typically have a fat side or what other ideas do people have? Thank you.

Guess I’m too used to watching movies and burying and undeserving politicians get taps nowadays.

His honor guard was crisp and his burial plot well attended to. Very beautiful with the headstones on a rolling hillside.

Very peaceful

I went back to look at the order and you are correct. It is a 5’x9.5’ display case. As a triangle, it fits perfectly, it’s the thickness or depth of the flag that’s giving me fits.

He believed the honor was reserved for those who were in combat.

Not an uncommon thought, honorable.

The case is correct then and I believe that your assessment is correct. You may want to contact the commander of the local VFW and explain the situation. Perhaps they can fold it properly for you.

I feel the same way about parking spots reserved for veterans.

As I was getting my pass @ Ft Carson CO, the guy apologized that he had no 'Veteran' stickers. I asked what that would do for me, he said I could park closer to the PX/Commissary. I told him I would walk because I could.

No problem. I didn’t notice your tagline. I retired from the USAF in 1998.

Do the refold, press and fold. The flag will fit the case with that detail worked.

Ask the Doctor about using a Wound Vac. They make a huge difference in healing time and keeping the wound clean.

I had one after having surgery on My Foot that removed the bottom center 1/3 to a depth of 25mm. The entire missing area of tissue was completely healed in 6 months.

DuckDuckGo search for Wound Vac to learn more.

I’m familiar with a Wound Vac - cousin of mine ended up on one after having a significant amount of flesh removed, down to his shin bone, due to one of those “flesh eating” infections. He was very close to losing his leg from the knee down.

If the puncture needs “cleaning out” & they have to go in & remove infected flesh, then maybe a Wound Vac would be something appropriate. The puncture site was looking the best it’s looked this evening when his bandage was changed so fingers crossed he’s turning the corner. Leg swelling is down a bit ... still pretty red, but the area has not increased in size/spread.

Thanks for the suggestion - appreciate it and I’ll definitely keep it in mind. Glad you were helped and healed up fairly quickly considering how extensive the surgery was on your foot!

Is the puncture wound being Packed so it can heal from the inside outward ?

I had the choice of amputation of the Foot or trying the scraping out. I told Doc let’s try the scrape 1st. That was like 4 years ago.

Prayers for a clean and speedy healing of the puncture wound.

You probably have a better-quality mostly-cotton flag and a case made for an el-cheapo synthetic flag.

I should have added to my post that in both cases, the young troops (a specialist and corporal) were pretty sharp and very professional.

I can imagine that the number of troops who can play an instrument is pretty sparse these days. Its simply a numbers thing—not a ill intent.

Take the display case back, and then purchase one that the flag will fit into.
