I hope you all like this one. I thought it was beautiful and true, a new explanation of the source (or perhaps the destination) of desperation. Not political at all, except maybe subliminally.
The article wasn’t really about the question, of course.
Pretty great writing style, of the sort that might persuade me read for pleasure again. Thanks for that.

I was unimpressed by Vegas, but did find it interesting to watch people at the roulette table. Often, someone would put some chips down on a number and the fidget with them, moving them frantically from one spot to another before the wheel spun. What were they doing, I wondered. Then I remembered reading an article which suggested that future events triggered a “pilot wave” which traveled backward in time. Were these people trying to sense that faint pilot wave, and is this what we call an “inkling”?
“I’m spending 3 or 4 nights after driving up to the Maine coast in a few weeks.
Now that is gonna cost a fortune unfortunately..
That’s like THREE weeks poolside in Las Vegas!
Ugh..”
Ugh is right. Still, Maine, you know... gotta be nice up there...
“I only play dice and use the 10% rule so I was good for the days we were there. My wife plays roulette and had a blast. Went first class all the way.”
...sounds like you’ve got it wired... congrats!
“What a dumb*** question. The answer is:
“Money! It’s a hit.
Don’t give me that do-goody-good bull****”.”
....you’re not a dope smoker, by any chance... ??
“Watch and see if you can find out...”
Huh! Peaceful and clean. Maybe I should check back at 10 pm on a Saturday? lol
“...sounds like you’ve got it wired... congrats!”
Vegas is a great town if you go there to have fun.
YUKKK!!
“The article wasn’t really about the question, of course.”
...you NOTICED!!! Thank you.
...that’s what I thought...
“Trite.”
...really? Personally, I’ve never read anything like that before...

...no, an inkling is like, CS Lewis or JRR Tolkien, people like that. It is interesting, though, how gambling kind of automatically separates people into types. Ever see the Tchaikovsky opera “Queen of Spades?” Some really get into it... some really don’t... and I’m sure there are a lot of varieties in between (or maybe on different axes).
“Thanks for that.”
...very welcome...
Ah, a Godfather fan...
He’s writing to impress everyone with his ability to string together sentences.
Probably an MFA.
“He’s writing to impress everyone with his ability to string together sentences.

...ah, I got the impression he’s been impressing people for QUITE A WHILE with his ability to string together sentences, and it’s getting tiring, and he wants off the train, but it’s moving too fast...
Think of Las Vegas as Nassau in the Bahamas in the 18th century. Pirates ran the place and did whatever they wanted. The law couldn't get to them.
Vegas was a desert island, the place where the laws of other states against gambling and prostitution didn't apply. It wouldn't have been much of anything, except the postwar economic boom provided lots of money, inexpensive travel, and big ambitions to the city.
