TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) â It was described as chaos in the air Wednesday as an American Airlines flight from Tampa to Nashville was diverted after experiencing severe turbulence.
The plane made an emergency landing in Birmingham, Alabama. Eight people on board suffered injuries and were taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
Temple Terrace native Travis Hamilton (snip) was in the airplane bathroom when, about an hour into the flight, it felt like he was on a roller coaster.
âBefore I could finish washing my hands, I was on the roof of the bathroom,â Hamilton said. âUp and down. 10 seconds.â
Hamilton said when it stopped, all he could see was blood.
âI looked in the mirror and it was kind of running down my face,â Hamilton said.
He had to kick his way out the bathroom. He described what he saw next as chaos in the cabin.
âOxygen masks were down,â Hamilton said. âBabies were screaming. Everybodyâs kind of like, what just happened?â
Hamilton then realized, he wasnât the only one who was hurt.
âThe one stewardess, man, she was messed up,â Hamilton said. âThereâs blood just all over her face and the other one couldnât hardly turn her head or neck or anything.â
(snip)
When the plane landed, Hamilton got checked out by fire rescue. He had a small cut on his head and kept it moving. Hamilton said that all he got in return for his rough ride was a $12 meal voucher and AAdvantage miles, which wasnât good enough.
While he ended up getting to his destination in Nashville, Hamilton believes the airline should be punished.
âThe fact they gave less than a minute warning to put on our seat belt, they need to be held accountable for it,â Hamilton said.

Guess the baby has never flown over the Rockies
What a puss...just stay off the big bad airplane in the future and you won’t have anything to whine about...
My late mother told of a similar experience flying across the Pacific. Her plane hit an air pocket and proceeded to drop a few thousand feet before catching air again. She said she screamed the whole way down.
First aid is about all the airlines owes you if it wasn’t their error.
He's absolutely right! He should have been awarded his own private nine-passenger Cessna Citation XLS and been provided with the services of a professional pilot and copilot for twenty years.
And they should throw in a pony.
Thank you. I’m not technical enough to know how to put up images.
These used to be called “acts of God” Things happen, we can’t control everything , unless we are god.

True, but at least they could have comped the flight. They comped my room because I had to get up in the middle of the night, because a fire alarm went off in the hotel. It wasn’t the hotels fault, but they did it anyway.
I think a bloody head is worth a free flight. Offering $12 is more likely to make someone mad than happy.
Sure, Karen.
Uh...no.
It’s pretty easy.
Hamilton, who was in the lav when the turbulence hit, is lucky he didn’t come out all blue. As for little warning, I don’t support there is a CAT detector to help there. Also, IIRC, passengers are always told to keep buckled when seated. Sounds like good advice.
I want a pony
WW rules (but they went to Mexico so maybe Moyes rules now)
Grifter nation. Everybody wants free stuff.
Why not, future passengers ultimately pay for those payouts anyway due to constant rate hikes.
Maybe sue God because He was ultimately responsible for the weather.......
The article is so poorly written it has to be a bot that did it.
Kudos to aircraft designers, for the aircraft structure to withstand such strong shock loads from storm winds. I was on a flight from Phoenix to Fort Huachuca, and the plane was shaking like it was hitting a pile of rocks. Amazing the structure did not disintegrate.
If he was in the restroom 60 seconds probably wouldn’t be enough time to get back to his seat and fasten the seat belt, especially if his seat was not an aisle seat.
