Tiny turtles are undoubtedly adorable creatures, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning people to steer clear of giving them a cuddle and a kiss following a salmonella outbreak.
The agency said 15 people have been infected with salmonella with five hospitalized, though no deaths have been reported yet, according to an investigation notice.
People can get salmonella by touching a turtle or something in its environment and then touching their mouth or handling food, regardless of the animal’s size, the CDC said.

man...i just loved my pet turtles...hated when they died. Even when i was older, got my hands on a Wood Turtle....smart as hell...guess they are prohibited to own..need a license of some type..
If you would cook the turtle to 165 degrees it would be safe to play with.
Yeah, but Ai think the stores stopped carrying them because it was cruel. You can mail order them.

Could be. I always saw them at the dime store. Mail order doesn’t seem much of an improvement.
Overnight delivery. They watch the weather. Good way to spend $50 on a $3 turtle.
Every fall the Sportsmans Club would put on a turtle fry.
All you could eat fried turtle, cole slaw, and mashed potatoes.
For dessert we would get plates of kneecaps (Knieküchlein). Sometimes they had chocolate ones to go with the standard vanilla. Nobody liked or ate the chocolate ones, they were just there so you knew you were at an upscale fancy eats type of event.
If you wash your hands after playing with them, no problem. The sad part, as a kid I had them and they never grew and died.
As an adult, I got a couple of small ones, but heated the water, and they grew like gangbusters. They were close to a foot long after a year. The tank also required a lot of cleaning.
: ) After I couldn’t get the little turtles anymore, I had to rely on random box turtles showing up in my yard. I would keep them for a day or two and let them go, mainly because my mother told me they needed to be free.
The Midwest was pretty good turtle hunting country. I live in a turtle desert, now.(Oregon) I’ve got a small snapper, and thinking about getting a Razorback musk turtle
I have always liked them. I see land and water turtles in pet shops sometimes and would get one except my wife doesn’t like anything that’s coldblooded. I have always lived in swampy areas where we have mass migrations. I saw a big snapper just make it across the road a couple of weeks ago.
A friend moved to South Dakota from here. Her husband bowfishes, and got a big snapper. They were butchering it, and I was talking to her. Her three year old was holding these enormous turtle feet, and she was explaining to him that I have a pet snapping turtle. He was a bit confused, and asked if it was fluffy. So, I named the turtle Fluffy.
Yup. I remember from 60 years ago that the little guys were linked to some diseases such as salmonella.
Seems like we have known this for a long time.

At the place we lived before this, a desert tortoise showed up in the yard one day. Totally illegal to keep one as a pet, but we were hoping he’d hang around for a while. He didn’t.
While living in the deep South 4 decades ago, I had a ‘neighbor’ couple of miles away who had 4, acre or so size ponds raising them. Many thousands of turtles.
he said it was legal to raise and export them for sale overseas, which he did.
But, he was so paranoid about govt he wouldn’t even give me one. So, when he turned his head i pocketed Benny, took him home to my children who put him in the aquarium with the tropical fish. He lived there happily until growing too large.
No one ever got sick.

Touching raw chicken is the primary cause of salmonella.
