“Suppose they gave a war and no one came.”
That was a slogan of the 1960s anti-war movement. Now it’s becoming a reality, at least for the United States Army, as recruiting woes mount. The problem is a simple one: Not enough people want to be soldiers — and with reason.
The Army’s No. 2 officer told Congress Tuesday that the service has no choice but to reduce total force strength by 10,000 for the fiscal year starting in September, with the next year looking even bleaker: By the end of fiscal 2023, it could be up to 28,000 soldiers short of its 476,000-troop target. Army Secretary Christine Wormuth’s spokeswoman said it’s met only half of its recruiting goal so far this fiscal year — with just 2½ months left.
Why is this? There are several potential explanations. One is that the new “woke” Army isn’t all that appealing to the kinds of people who traditionally join the military.
As Jeff Groom writes in Spectator World, the Army has waged a culture war, and it’s a quagmire: “Imagine you are an eighteen-year-old, white, Christian male in Georgia with a family history of military service. As you progressed through your teen years, you watched Confederate statues being torn down and military bases being renamed, endless media and elitist demonization of your culture as racist and deplorable and backwards, and military and civilian leadership that thinks diversity and inclusion (i.e. fewer white men) is best thing since sliced bread. Would you volunteer? Identity politics works both ways.”

This past Sunday, my husband and I were at the 49th State Brewing Co. in Anchorage, Alaska. The bar was extremely crowded, and first come, first serve. My husband spotted two seats at a crowded table, walked over and asked if we could take the seats. Everyone was very welcoming and said come on over, and made room for us. Introductions were made, etc etc. One of the gals in the group we were talking to is a Lieutenant Colonel in the army, working for the Pentagon. She is only 3 degrees separated from the new female secretary of the army. Very impressive young black woman (showed us video of she and her besty getting tased together as part of training). She is on assignment for the next 2 years to go around the country interviewing military personnel as to why they are not signing back up, leaving early, why they think the recruitment goals are not being met. I seriously had to bite my tongue. I could have told her everything this article points out, without even being in the military. HOWEVER, it was the last night of a great vacation to celebrate our 30th anniversary, and I didn’t want to get into it with everyone at the table. Most were obvious liberals, and I was just glad to get a seat. I hope the people she interviews are honest with her.
Yep, sometimes best to bite the lower lip and try to remember what they look like. Because you may be defending your life against them one day.
They should just incentivize all enlisting transsexuals to become instant COVID Battlefield Commisioned O10s.
Then give them a Purple Heart and a Congressional Medal of Honor after their gender affirming surgery.
Recruiting problem solved! We’ll have the all time proudest Disarmed Services.
I wonder how much standards are being dropped just to make the numbers they have today?
I can see “Join the military or go to jail” making a comeback.
USS Harvey Milk
“Will they ask “Can you count to twenty two using your fingers, toes and teeth?”
I just ran across this article on Twitter:
One paragraph:
“Planned to establish a special training camp for applicants with low scores on qualifying exams and those who exceed body fat standards beyond the usual waiver threshold. The service is weighing a special task force at Fort Jackson to train them to the entry standard before they can go to basic.”
Firing most of the three and four star officers would get the message down the ranks quickly.
Pretty much. I was Navy but when I was a civilian working for the Marines i noticed the Majors were the worst. Idiots. The Colonels were ok, in the Marines it takes a savvy, smart guy to make Colonel. Not so much O6 in the Navy outside the line.

A woman Secretary of the Army. This pretty much says it all. When we went to the Woke optics of putting females in charge of combat related units, despite the fact that the military is only 17% female and a tiny percentage in a combat arms MOS, the young men that fight our wars said no, thanks. Too much of this today. When I served, women sucked as commanders. Never ran across one that was effective. I would not want my children in today’s military if they are to entrust their lives to a woman commander in a combat unit.
