Marijuana plant might hold key to treating chronic inflammation

Several minor cannabinoids contained in the cannabis plant "strongly inhibit" the activation of human immune cells that lead to chronic inflammation, according to physiologists at The Queen's Medical Center of Hawaii. The study also revealed the strongest inhibitory cannabinoid, cannabigerolic acid, disrupts a key mechanism that allows calcium ions to enter and activate immune cells. As a result, cannabigerolic acid suppresses the spread of inflammatory signals.

Chronic inflammation is a biological process in which inflamed tissues release messenger molecules called cytokines. These cytokines recruit immune cells that become activated and maintain the inflammatory response. This chronic inflammation initiates or exacerbates numerous human disease conditions.

"Cannabigerolic acid, either alone or in combination with other cannabinoids, may be a key ingredient in medicines that work to break the inflammatory cycle that maintains autoimmune diseases and chronic pain," said Reinhold Penner, MD, Ph.D., co-author of the study. "This could lead to targeted and more specific anti-inflammatory and anti-pain treatments without the risk of serious side effects often encountered with steroids, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or opioids."

"Acidic cannabinoids suppress pro-inflammatory cytokine release by blocking Store-Operated Calcium Entry" is published ahead of print in Function.

The Schedule 1 crowd won’t have a problem with the non-psychoactive phytocannabinoids.

A disabling inflammatory problem of at least 30 years duration, not responsive to any conventional medical measures, began to improve in 2015 when I started taking full-spectrum CBD orally. Probably 80% better at this time and I continue CBD.

I am against smoking MJ for myself, but I know people with constant bad back pain and it does help them. What does it matter to you if a person can get relief? Sorry, if you have a personal reason to want to keep others from pain relief.

Cancer victims are also helped, stomach wise.
If I ever get to the point of having to choose between pain relievers, I would choose weed. Hopefully I just won’t act as silly.

Character of the person smoking MJ or drinking alcohol is the problem as I see it.
I can’t drink wine because I cry. I can’t drink whiskey because I get mean. Just sayin’.

Mj as far as I see makes you act silly and evidently hungry. :-)

“Chronic inflammation is a biological process in which inflamed tissues release messenger molecules called cytokines. These cytokines recruit immune cells that become activated and maintain the inflammatory response.”

Same mechanism basically that caused the “cytokine storms” that did all the lung damage in the first wave of COVID. By coincidence, marijuana was legalized Jan. 1, 2020 where I live...

Umm, you realize that opiates are still the only real choice for serious pain relief that modern medicine has to offer right? Short of just cutting off your nerve endings surgically, I guess.
