ELVIS AGAIN
Elvis...the movie | 07/19/2022 | Onto

Posted on 07/19/2022 3:34:30 PM PDT by ontap

My wife and I went to see Elvis…again…I am seldom moved by a motion picture but this one is special. First let me lead with the fact that I am 75 years old. Elvis was a big part of my youth and life. His career span 23 years, a relative short time for the impact he made. He’s been dead for forty five years and as far as I know no single artist has even gotten close to his success. The Beatles and Stones have but I said single artist. I was seven years old when he started out, I was thirty at the time of his death. Please excuse the rambling of an old man but so many memories of my youth came gushing back. Bare with me while I share some of them. I turned sixteen in 1963 and met a little thirteen year old girl, actually she was two weeks away from being fourteen….I fell in love with her, unfortunately she did not reciprocate the feelings. I’m guessing all of you have a similar story. I went in the Marine Corp at age twenty in 1967 I got out in 1969. Upon arriving home I met a woman and married her in 1970…actually it was that thirteen year old I fell in love with in 1963 she was now twenty. Needless to say neither of us were the same people. We will celebrate our 53rd anniversary in March of 2023. I’ve been in love with her for sixty years. We had two children and now have seven grandchildren and three, soon to be four, great grandchildren. I imagine you are wondering what one has to do with the other, well as I sit through that movie it all came back…at different times in the movie I remember the different parts of our relationship. Now I realize how fortunate we are to have lived the life we have. There has never been any one like Elvis…and to my mind there never will be. Thanks for listening to my story of me, my wife and Elvis. He put my life to song! Hell…I might go see it again!!!

“Judy Garland and Bob Hope come to mind, but the point isn’t worth arguing“

Actually I’ve heard Bing.Crosby was ahead of Elvis and the others in many music industry stats.

I've done better than that: my now 11 YO grandson usually accompanies me on my road trips, usually for a Gonzaga basketball game within a day's drive of Dallas.

Nearly 5 years ago, I had the best road trip of my life. We went to Nashville, my two sons and grandson. My wife was terrified that he wasn't safe, but he was fine.

On the way home, we stopped at Sun Studio in Memphis, where Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash got their starts. After the tour, we spent 15 minutes in the studio, he was able to stand on the exact spot where Elvis made his first record.

We also spent a few days in Nashville, going to the Country Music HOF, it was a ball. Just to make sure he wasn't homesick, on the third day, I asked him if he was having a good time.

His answer? YEAHHHHHHHHHHH!!! LOL

Thanks so much for your comments. I loved reading them. My daughter and I are going to see the movie in a couple days. My husband and I and our children were visiting Cave of the Winds in Colorado when news of his death came over the intercom. So much to say. I’ll just go see the movie.

“When he was inducted into the Army in 1958, he lost his edge and never regained it.”

I have noticed that when it comes to Elvis, some people bend over backward until their head touches the ground trying to come up with nonsense.

Like with you, my wife of close to 40 years, had no interest in me when I first became interested in her. Then a couple years later I came to her aid when she was having trouble, and her attitude changed.

I hate to say it, but I believe Madonna has passed Elvis in both top ten singles and top ten albums.

My 88 year old father who recently passed away loved Elvis, not for his music but for the fact he was drafted and did his two years without prospering. I think it was Steve Lawrence who he despised because he went in but traded his fame for recognition & special duty.

The move was good but could have better by not so much focus on Tom Parker....and playing more of this gospel and R&B. music....

I was 8 years old when Elvis passed in 1977. And I was being raised in an abusive, dysfunctional household. As a result, I turned towards watching LOTS of TV (cartoons, movies, and tv shows) as a way to provide myself with escape and comfort from my misery.

Among the many things I watched and enjoyed were Elvis Presley movies. They really helped me to preserve what few shreds of sanity I had as well as provided me with much needed laughter, happiness, and joy in an otherwise joyless existence.

So, I say to Elvis, thank you. Thank you, Elvis. Thank you very much.

I’m assuming they left out the part where he wanted his body guards to kill a man or how he made fun of Christians. (its on tape)

“Agreed, Garth Brooks is the Elvis of our generation. Pretty amazing entertainer and good guy too.”

You have got to be kidding me. Garth Brooks will never reach the level of entertainer that Elvis Presley was to his generation.

Personally, Garth Brooks’ nasally singing grates on my nerves and his looks are as average as you can get.

Elvis was from my Mama’s generation (I’m 61) but I can clearly see that the man was very good-looking, dripping with charisma, and had an extraordinary voice.

Sorry, but Garth Brooks is not even in the running in this or any other generation.
