ELVIS AGAIN
Elvis...the movie | 07/19/2022 | Onto

Posted on 07/19/2022 3:34:30 PM PDT by ontap

My wife and I went to see Elvis…again…I am seldom moved by a motion picture but this one is special. First let me lead with the fact that I am 75 years old. Elvis was a big part of my youth and life. His career span 23 years, a relative short time for the impact he made. He’s been dead for forty five years and as far as I know no single artist has even gotten close to his success. The Beatles and Stones have but I said single artist. I was seven years old when he started out, I was thirty at the time of his death. Please excuse the rambling of an old man but so many memories of my youth came gushing back. Bare with me while I share some of them. I turned sixteen in 1963 and met a little thirteen year old girl, actually she was two weeks away from being fourteen….I fell in love with her, unfortunately she did not reciprocate the feelings. I’m guessing all of you have a similar story. I went in the Marine Corp at age twenty in 1967 I got out in 1969. Upon arriving home I met a woman and married her in 1970…actually it was that thirteen year old I fell in love with in 1963 she was now twenty. Needless to say neither of us were the same people. We will celebrate our 53rd anniversary in March of 2023. I’ve been in love with her for sixty years. We had two children and now have seven grandchildren and three, soon to be four, great grandchildren. I imagine you are wondering what one has to do with the other, well as I sit through that movie it all came back…at different times in the movie I remember the different parts of our relationship. Now I realize how fortunate we are to have lived the life we have. There has never been any one like Elvis…and to my mind there never will be. Thanks for listening to my story of me, my wife and Elvis. He put my life to song! Hell…I might go see it again!!!

Was just talking to a friend about this movie and Elvis. He broke down a lot of barriers and was THEE rock and roll idol. Maybe the Beatles came close to Elvis-mania but Elvis was the snowplow for the rest.

Is it worth a watch?

Thank you for posting that. My sister and I used to love that song. “Elvis eats boats, Elvis eats boats…”

That brought up a nice memory.

While you’re reminiscing, write down or video yourself expanding on what you told us. Explain those moments in your life. Share it with your kids and grandkids.

The 1968 comeback concert on television was probably his peak performance.

He slowly began his decline shortly after he went back on tour.

When he first hit the waves in the 90s with ‘Friends in low places’ I was initally a fan. THEN he started all of his advocating for homosexuals. He was an apologist for that behavior so...that ended that and really that’s when I noticed CW music’s leftward lurch. Sorry, I don’t know your reasons but wanted to ‘air’ mine. :)

Except for one person. The evil opposite of Elvis has no Elvis in him. Michael J Fox has no Elvis in him.

I believe that the Army ruined Elvis. In 1957, Elvis was the coolest guy on the plant, by far. He was pushing the envelope and posed a real threat to (adult) society at the time.

When he was inducted into the Army in 1958, he lost his edge and never regained it.

Now I have nothing against the military. In fact, I served in it myself (Marine Corps) and it did me a lot of good. But Elvis had no business serving in the military once he made it as a big rock star. He didn't add anything to the Army. If anything, his two year stint was nothing but a distraction. However, the powers that be at the time resented his hold on the youth of America and felt that his induction would be a good "comeuppance" to the lad and put him in his place, so to speak.

Well it pretty much worked out that way. Once out of the Army, Elvis was relegated to lounge singer status and was no more dangerous than Bing Crosby. A bunch of forgettable "B" movies and tepid soundtrack albums would follow.

"Viva Las Vegas" indeed.

The Beatles and The Rolling Stones would pick up the mantle a few years later but they could not get inducted into the Army because they were British.

Agreed, Garth Brooks is the Elvis of our generation. Pretty amazing entertainer. Good guy too.

If you say so.

He turned down an invitation to play at Trump's inauguration and ultimately played at Biden's......

That indicates to me that he's just a dumbass chump.......

When I hear “Burning Love”, I can close my eyes and see Bill Clinton at the microphone.

Garth Brooks is responsible for the wussification of country music.
