Methanol was found in all of their bodies and investigations are continuing to determine whether the levels of the toxic chemical were enough to have killed them.
“Methanol has been detected in all the 21 individuals that were there, however there is still progressive analysis of the quantitative levels of methanol and whether it could have been the final cause of death,” Dr. Litha Matiwane, Eastern Cape provincial deputy director for clinical service, said at press conference in East London Tuesday.

Years ago, in or around Wheaton Illinois, someone spiked the punch at a high school party a couple of fatalities and others permanently damaged.
METHANOL = WOOD ALCOHOL = DEADLY POISON!......................🤢
“METHANOL = WOOD ALCOHOL “
You do not need wood alcohol to get methanol.
Yes, if memory serves, it is one of the first products of distillation when making moonshine, which is why moonshiners throw out the first batch (They have a name for it).
Sounds like someone was trying to make their own snort and sell it as product.
Maybe someone who makes spirits could chime in.
I read years ago that the methanol comes from the methyl groups on pectin present in the fermented plant, fruit, whatever you make liquor from.
Then when you distill the fermentation broth you have to be sure to control the temperature to evaporate the methanol first, then afterward collect the ethanol.
Is this correct?
So it could be homemade liquor made poorly?
“Yes, if memory serves, it is one of the first products of distillation when making moonshine, which is why moonshiners throw out the first batch (They have a name for it).”
Moonshine is not wood alcohol.
Whoever was making Jailhouse Hooch did NOT follow Big Bubba’s recipe TO THE LETTER.
What a shame. Dumb kids. It’s amazing ANY of us survive our youth.
Sounds like someone knew enough about distillation to do it, but not enough to make it safe.
Terrible way to go.
I accidently ingested methanol once in the form of windshield washer fluid (40% methanol). I was drunk at the time and mistook it for a gallon of blue raspberry koolaid that I had in my kitchen sitting next to it. They had to fly in an antidote from out of town, though later I learned that if I kept drinking ethanol for a day or two, the methanol would have been metabolized harmlessly by my body. The body produces small amounts of methanol on its own, but preferentially metabolizes ethanol over methanol. I must say though that I got a much better buzz from the methanol lol.
No moonshine is mostly corn mash, if I recall. Never tried to make it. I own a still but only for distilling water and I don’t have the extra condenser part (forget the name of it) that you’d need for making alcohol.
I don’t think you need any wood product to get methanol. It would probably be present when making any ethanol. I’m sure there are some where who have expertise in this.
(thud). (thud thud thud) "Oh, "methanol", never mind."
i thought these were all children?
” (They have a name for it).”
Fusel oil.
Apparently, a minute amount is produced in the fermentation...
Something new every day.

“Methanol is formed in very small amounts during fermentation, the process by which alcohol is made from plant products like grape juice or cereal grains. There are small amounts in wine and beer, but not enough to cause problems when these products are made at home, says Leigh Schmidtke, a senior lecturer in wine microbiology and production at Charles Sturt University. But home distillation to make spirits like gin or rum concentrates the levels of both ethanol and methanol.”
Mash yields a small amount of methanol which boils at 151 degrees versus ethanol at 173 degrees.
By distilling first at less than 173 you can discard the methanol.
Wood alcohol is made from wood products and produces methanol.
I drink methanol once a day (in moderation)
Methanol is a natural by-product of making tequila, and according to Mexican law it must actually contain methanol. The minimum amount required is 0.3 g/L (grams/Litre) and the maximum allowed is 3g/L. One hundred percent agave tequilas generally have the highest levels of methanol while mixtos have significantly less.
Methanol is produced by the beakdown of the pectin. Different grains/grapes have different amounts of pectin.
Which is why freeze distilled products like early applejack were dangerous
Colonial would set bucket of hard cider outside in winter
Water would freeze concentrating alcohol and other esters including methanol in resulting liquid
Do it few times and could get really toxic
True, but old timers called it that. It can be made from coal also..................
True, but old timers called it that.”
Many old timers were uninformed. Moonshiners knew the difference!
