An egg a day can help maintain vitamin D levels in winter

Eating an egg every day in winter can help keep your vitamin D levels up, new research has found.

As many as one in three Australian adults may have vitamin D deficiency. It can lead to fatigue, aches, muscle weakness, mood changes and an increased risk of contracting respiratory infections.

"Vitamin D deficiency can have a negative impact on bone health as the key function of vitamin D is to promote calcium absorption," says research lead, Professor Robin Daly.

"Vitamin D deficiency may also increase the risk of other non-skeletal diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, depression and Alzheimer's disease," Prof. Daly says.

Vitamin D is difficult to source from foods. People with low vitamin D levels are often prescribed supplements. Eggs are one of the few foods that are a naturally rich source of vitamin D.

"Weekly consumption of seven eggs was an effective dietary approach to optimize vitamin D levels during the winter months when sunlight hours decline," says Prof. Daly of the IPAN study's findings.

The study is the first to investigate the dose-response relationship between eating commercially available free-range eggs and blood vitamin D levels in Australian adults.

Fifty-one adults aged 25–40 years were randomly assigned to three groups that were asked to consume either two, seven or 12 eggs per week for 12 weeks.

But won't eating an egg every day increase your blood cholesterol? As well as measuring blood vitamin D levels, the research team also looked at changes in blood lipids. Prof Daly said there were no significant adverse effects on cholesterol.

Participants found it relatively easy to eat the eggs as part of their daily diets.

"The simple strategy of eating an egg a day could help prevent health complications caused by vitamin D deficiencies."

If you eat the whole egg, you also get calcium from the shell :)

An egg a day keeps the doctor away? All these years I have believed it was an apple a day. (I’m 72).

The real man test is if you can eat the 100 year old eggs the serve in China.

No wonder Bush threw up

He had the flu that’s the ticket.

My sister is a 2 egg a day person, at breakfast. Has been for 25 years. Cholesterol is fine.

I’m a 3-egg/day person, 4-5 days a week. I usually eat 1 1/2 meals a day, and my “half-meal” is often a 3 egg omelet with cheese or bacon added. Sometimes both. From what I’ve read, cholesterol has almost nothing to do with heart attacks, and eaten cholesterol has almost nothing to do with cholesterol levels in the blood. Our BODIES make most of it anyways....

Vit. D3, Zinc, Magnesium.... Covid DONE!!

You hit on a point that many people don't know or understand about cholesterol.

In the absence of dietary cholesterol, your body will just going on making its own cholesterol. And not necessarily the good kind.

A diet rich in the good kinds of fats actually increase the good cholesterol (LDL) while reducing the bad cholesterol (HDL), giving you an overall much healthier cholesterol profile.

The irony here is that those who go out of their way to avoid dietary cholesterol, such as eating egg whites only (sacrilege!) and using margarine instead of butter are actually very likely to be increasing the levels of bad cholesterol in their bodies!

The HDL and LDL types of cholesterol need to be reversed in my previous post.

HDL = Good cholesterol
LDL = Bad cholesterol

I make that mistake all the time!

When I make egg salad for sandwiches, I do add some juice from the Spanish olive jar, and chopped olives. It’s the only way. Hardboiled eggs’ chopped olives and onion; smidges of olive “juice” and mustard; and a little mayo. (Not too slimy.)
