Texas hospitals delaying care over abortion law, letter says

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Some hospitals in Texas have reportedly refused to treat patients with major pregnancy complications for fear of violating the state’s abortion ban, the Texas Medical Association said in a letter this week.

The association did not name the hospitals but said it’s received complaints that hospitals, administrators and their attorneys may be prohibiting doctors from providing medically appropriate care in some situations, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Texas law bans most abortions after about six weeks of a pregnancy. A total ban — that includes exemptions if a woman’s life or health is danger — will take effect in the coming weeks following last month’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade.

The letter, sent Wednesday to the Texas Medical Board, cited several examples in which medical care was delayed.

In one case, a central Texas hospital reportedly told a physician not to treat an ectopic pregnancy until it ruptured, the letter said. An ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a fertilized egg attached outside of the uterus, is not viable.

“Delayed or prevented care in this scenario creates a substantial risk for the patient’s future reproductive ability and poses serious risk to the patient’s immediate physical wellbeing,” the letter said.

The Texas Medical Board confirmed it received the letter but a spokesperson said the board cannot confirm or deny any specific complaints.

The Biden administration issued guidance this week that said hospitals must provide abortion services if the life of the mother is at risk.

“In one case, a central Texas hospital reportedly told a physician not to treat an ectopic pregnancy until it ruptured, the letter said. An ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a fertilized egg attached outside of the uterus, is not viable”

IF this is true the patient has a VERY good case for malpractice.🤔

The “central Texas hospital” is in College Station they had a local news story about it

And honestly a similar thing happened to an old high school friend’s wife here in Fort Worth, she was having some kind of miscarriage and the hospital contacted their legal team and said she had to wait and come back when she had a fever

I think some of these medical issue cases are just going to fall through the cracks unfortunately until it all gets sorted out, and we find some sort of middle ground to these social war political issues

“May” be refusing care. Well that’s definite.

There is no “news”. Just propaganda 24/7.

I dunno, my daughter said an L&D nurse at her church in Sugarland told her sure had witnessed 3 women die and 4 babies spontaneously aborted on one shift RE they didn’t want to violate the new law. Gotta be more to it.

A physician not to treat an ectopic pregnancy until it ruptured is not only a giant lawsuit but also a Federal offence and the administer and the physician should be charged in Federal Court for it. The pay out from the hospital fund is going to be HUGE I’d like to get me some of those millions take a third plus legal fees woop woop. The Federal emergency medical care act is codified USC code it carries the full weight of the federal court system. Hit this hospital with it and hit them HARD that will serve as an example to not harm a woman for your silly cultural views. An ecotopic pregnancy is always a life threatening event to the mother it is also never survivable for the fetus it’s not in the uterus and it will kill the mother 100% of the time if not removed before it hemorrhages into the abdominal cavity. Sue them fast and hard and get the US AG to slam them in Federal custody on not only a emergency care act but also Federal felony attempted murder charges set that bail at a million per charge cash only bail up front.

There is a slew of lawsuits coming. I have two X’s that are parkland hospital in Dallas RNs they also can confirm care is being denied out of fear that idiot Paxton who should in jail not the AG of Texas is going to charge them for giving care mandated by Federal law. A few people need some US Marshals to show up and perp wall them to the D.C. Holding facility that will change the attitudes real quick. Paxton is toast in Nov he is universally viewed as a crook. Here is a sitting AG who is under indictment and has a mugshot while sitting in.office good bye and good riddance.
