If You're Owned by a Cat, Scientists Want to Hear From You
gizmodo ^ | Ed Cara

The work is being conducted by scientists from the Animal Welfare Epidemiology Lab at the University of California Davis. Last fall, the team recruited volunteers who owned exactly two cats to look at cat videos on the internet, as part of a project to study how well owners could read feline body language

And, with the new umteen different automatic cat litter box things available, they are even more easy to take care of. I recommend the Leos Loo Too machines...

For the counters, maybe. I’m not going to festoon everything the little beasts want to claw, and I’m sure not putting duct tape on my head at night.

Cats have zero empathy with or for their humans. They adopt the most accesible human they can find, and latch onto them like a leech. I have an idiot brother with five acts, each of which merely arrived independently at his door one day, and like an idiot he gave them food and shelter. Now they own him.

And clean up the occasional hairball spit-up/vomit.

I got pretty good at catching that stuff on the fly. I’d see the cat starting to heave and I’d bound across the room, cup my hand under her mouth...and catch that “stuff”. MUCH EASIER to dump the goo in the commode/wash my hands than it was to clean the carpet.

for stuff they want to claw, just have something they prefer. Sisal does wonders... and if they get on your head, toss them... cats bounce and if you train them early they recover quick... a toss or two and they know... verboten. You are the great and high holy feeder after all. You could be a official in Romneys church. Cats are based around their bellies.

Hey UC Davis.

My cats obey five commands: come, no, up, down and stay.

If I had gotten the cats early in their lives, I would have potty trained them.

Oh, the short haired domestic male only speaks Spanish.

Took me a while to figure that out.

The Calico female understands only English.

I just happened to think of a cat-training technique used by one of my sisters, many years ago. Her kitten couldn’t be dissuaded from some obnoxious activity (don’t remember exactly what). One day she caught the kitten doing whatever it was, grabbed it, threw it in the toilet, closed the lid, and flushed three times, letting the tank refill each time. (Of course, the kitten was too big to go down the pipe.) She said the cat never, ever did that thing again. The drawback was having to deal with a psychotic wet cat tearing around the place after she let it out.

Never tried it myself.

Yeah, that’s pretty much the strategy for those things. Foot-pouncing also earns a quick trip off the bed.

Vomit is one thing all cat owners can relate to, for sure.

Whenever my cat starts going through her pre-vomit ritual, I grab her and rush to the nearest bathroom and hold her over the toilet. After she does her business, just flush and the trouble goes down the drain.

Unfortunately, her brother will not permit such time-saving maneuvers.

She better be careful. Kitty might puncher her implants.

The survey makes it seem like it is difficult to socialize a cat. As long as the cat is not disturbed or weaned too early, they tend to settle into nice cat behaviors with minimal interaction. They don’t step on a hot stove twice. The three year-old who gets scratched learns how NOT to touch kitty.

I did have one cat who was likely bi-polar. However, when she was affectionate, no cat was more affectionate. WHen she is in a bad mood just leave her be. I doubt training would have made a difference, and we weren’t going to get cat psychotropic drugs.

Finally, SOME cats NEED outdoor time. We are in the city, so we tried to keep Eustace indoors for his safety. (There are Coyotes near the mountains, and we didn’t know if he was car smart.) Twice, as an older kitten he ate things that caused an obstruction (Lego tire, chair leg tip piece). He has stopped these habits once we got a cat flap and was permitted outside. Our new neighborhood cats are fine, and we have seen no coyotes in our new home. The other cat can go outside, but rarely chooses to do so, she is far less interested in guarding the perimeter (well defined with cinder block walls, which also protects against less athletic coyotes.)

I kind of like the foot pouncing... a cat being a cat...
I like the unadulterated predators in my house. They have to behave though or the ultimate predator will torture them mercilessly. My cats respect me and I respect them. They are cats and I am boss cat. Dont cross boss cat. They know and it is peaceful. They even go hack up hairballs on the tile. Training. They will run across the house to pass a hair ball because carpet is a no no area. Cats are as smart as dogs, well smarter than a Weimaraner which has to be the dumbest dog God allowed, but getting them to understand is the tough part but once you do... they fetch slippers.
