Experts have revealed how shoppers have to 'build a relationship' with luxury watch brand Rolex by spending up to £100,000 on less desirable timepieces in order to pick up the latest models - as the brand tries to maintain exclusivity in the Instagram age.
While the uninitiated might assume that the luxurious fashion brand would happily take anyone's money, industry insiders have explained how the process of buying an expensive watch from the designer might be slightly be complicated than that.
Experts said that with demand outstripping supply, the brand has had to place limits on who can buy what watch - by deciding 'if customers are the right type of person' to wear their timepiece.

Above is a great story with a Vietnam Vet on the Auction Roadshow about his purchase of his Rolex during the war.
Bought a Rolex OP Datejust with the Jubilee band and blue dial in 1993. Didn’t wear it much as started working around high voltage about the same time. Brought it in to get cleaned /inspected and was surprised how much it appraised for (asked for insurance purposes). Ended up giving it to my stepdaughter to wear (apparently wearing watches with larger dials is a ‘thing - never knew).
I liked wearing it when I did and had no complaints.
“But if someone wants to pay $50K for a man-bracelet, to each his own.”
When my grandfather fled Germany, literally the only thing of value he had was his watch. Sold it in NYC and it was enough to start a new life.
They have other purposes in trying times.
Getting close to this territory :-)

“One additional fun fact that many people don’t know is that Rolex is a non-profit entity. All of their proceeds are reinvested into the company and/or used to advance the art of horology in general.”
I was not aware. Thanks!
ROTFLMAO! My wife and I LOVE “Only Fools and Horses” on Britbox! It is one of our all-time favorites, and our son loves it too. I remember that scene with Trig and “Dave,” (Rodney).Roger Lloyd-Pack was hysterical. Bless his memory.
My dad bought his Rolex at the Army PX in Yokohama in the 1950s. I still have it.
For at least the past 40 years, I have worn the cheapest Casio or Timex analog watch I can find. Never had one last 20 years, though, as I’m clumsy enough to break them after a few years at most. Waterproof is good.
I bought a fake Rolex ( we called them Folex’s ) in the ROK. You can tell the fakes because the second hand is not a sweep action, it ticks.
My wife gave me a G-Shock for Christmas a few years ago, but I could never get the hands to tell the same time as the digital display. I use it to set the watch that I actually wear.
The watch I have is the Tough Solar Radio controlled watch. Once you set the time the Watch receives the time signals from station WWV of the National bureau of Standards.
Though every watch I ever purchased was set to the correct time already.
Yeah, mine gets the atomic-clock time, and that’s what shows on the digital time display. But the analog hands show something completely different, and I’ve never been able to make them match. Sometimes I can get the hands to go around as if they’re resetting, but they always end up at some meaningless position. The instruction booklet is useless.
