Why you CAN'T buy a Rolex! Experts reveal how shoppers have to 'build a relationship' by 'spending up to £100,000' with the brand to pick up the latest watches

Experts have revealed how shoppers have to 'build a relationship' with luxury watch brand Rolex by spending up to £100,000 on less desirable timepieces in order to pick up the latest models - as the brand tries to maintain exclusivity in the Instagram age.

While the uninitiated might assume that the luxurious fashion brand would happily take anyone's money, industry insiders have explained how the process of buying an expensive watch from the designer might be slightly be complicated than that.

Experts said that with demand outstripping supply, the brand has had to place limits on who can buy what watch - by deciding 'if customers are the right type of person' to wear their timepiece.

Reminds me of an acquaintance who turned up her nose at me about something expensive she owned: “Of course you can’t own one.” I told her I already had two, which I did. Later, I read that they had the largest bankruptcy ever in the state and fled to France to get away from their creditors.

Rolex watches are nice, no doubt. I’m a pocket watch and suspenders type of guy so don’t own one. I just spent a few hundred rebuilding my 1924 Elgin which now runs perfectly. It’s probably not worth that much but I wanted to give the 95 year old watchmaker some work.

Bought one for $1100 in the 80’s and sold it around 2011. Realized a profit even including all the money I’d spent getting it tuned up a few times.

Went to a Luminox, I can actually see what time it is at night without my glasses.

The Rolex was nice to have, but not accurate like a quartz watch and could fall victim to bumps and shocks.

I just sold an old seamaster

I had forgotten I even had it but a friend said something about vintage watch prices.

I stopped at a local clock shop to ask if they could open it up for me and one of the customers asked to buy it

Apple iwatch for the ecg and heart monitoring. Time is transitory and has no real meaning—according to Alan Watts.

I do remember the ‘good old days’ when I had an IWC automatic bought second hand that I ASSUMED was authentic because who ever would fake an IWC? While nice, I found myself having to use my shortwave radio to get the Fort Collins time hack about once-a-month. So I took it to a reputable (expensive) jeweler and they showed me the inside works. Paid them the $25 and moved to a quartz Casio watch.

I now have a dress Breitling B1 quartz to go with my Polar V2 exercise watch. Since the latter gets the GPS time, I can correct the Breitling when it needs it ... 6 months perhaps? The videos on repair of these mechanical watches are fascinating and some movements are art works.

So, ... does anybody still listen to Fort Collins?

“No thank you. I could get the current time on my cellphone.”

Who wears a watch? Clunky, annoying thing weighing on your arm.

Depends. Are you buying a Rolex to impress people? Well then a good fake will probably due. Are you buying a Rolex to fulfill some life dream? Then a fake just ain’t gonna cut it.

“Clunky, annoying thing weighing on your arm.”

That someone might assault/kill you for if it is valuable enough.

I’ve actually had jewelers, acquaintances and even clients ask me if I was interested in selling my Seamaster. Nah, I’m good. Geez, if you go on eBay, the old 300’s are selling for ridiculous prices. If I were to realize some of those prices I could actually AFFORD a Submariner!

You’re right! My daughter has had three Birkins and it took many trips to Hermes to even see one. (I think it’s insanity to spend 15K on a purse.) She uses them for a year or so and then sells them for 14500, so the 500 per year makes it a bit more palatable.

Announcer: Someday, everyone will own a watch like this. Now, it is available only for the privileged few. The Mogasaki Corproration of Tokyo is honored to announce… Kromega III. [ lightning strikes ] A watch so complex, it takes two people to make it work. One hand wears the watch. The other hand presses the buttons that activate the 100% solid state multi-function digital quartz crystal micro-computer unit. And now, you’re ready for the third hand to trigger the light-luminating dial to give you an alphanumeric readout accurate to within 9 a year. It’s that simple.

KROMEGA III. Command-crafted in impact-resistant crushed chrome. It’s no wonder that professional skiiers prefer Kromega III over any ordinary timepiece.

[ Woman’s arm is shown with Lady Kromega III on her wrist ] Woman’s Voice: And I love Lady Kromega III. The sleek, space-age styling compliments any outfit. [ Woman’s other hand presses one of the buttons ] And the clearly displayed perpetual calendar helps me to remember my many appointments. Would you mind? [ other person brings in a spare hand to operate the Lady Kromega III ] Thank you.

Announcer: Kromega III. It’s like asking a stranger for the time.

Years and years ago my brother-in-law was showing off his Rolex. “Yeah, it was only $30 bucks! Got it from a guy in Times Square on my last trip out there!”

“Um - you know that’s not real, right?”

“I hope not or I wouldn’t wear it every day, but it keeps perfect time!”
