After the Supreme Court’s historic decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, some doctors are highlighting the 2012 death of a pregnant woman in Ireland and warning that the same thing could happen on a large scale in the United States.
Dr. Savita Halappanavar, a 31-year-old Indian-born dentist, died in 2012 in Galway, on Ireland’s west coast, after she was denied an abortion by doctors who cited the country’s strict laws, despite there being no chance of her baby’s survival, according to Ireland’s official report on the case.
Her death shook the foundations of the traditionally conservative and predominantly Roman Catholic country, and catalyzed its pro-abortion rights movement. In a 2018 referendum, Irish people voted by a two-thirds majority to legalize the procedure.
The avoidable death of Halappanavar, who was 17 weeks pregnant, proved that doctors — not politicians, police and judges — should help decide the best course of action in similar cases, according to Dr. Sabaratnam Arulkumaran, the expert who in 2013 wrote the official report on the case.
“That’s why Biden said that the issue should be between the patient and the doctor, rather than with the law,” he told NBC News by phone, referring to President Joe Biden’s speech reacting to Roe v. Wade’s reversal June 24.
In Halappanavar’s case, doctors opted against an abortion because the fetus had a heart rate and anyone carrying out a termination could theoretically have been prosecuted at a later date.
“Because the fetal heart rate was present all the time, the obstetrician did not do a termination. If someone decided that she had done it illegally, she would have gone to jail,” he said, referring to the doctor attending on Halappanavar.

Thanks CNBC this was SO relevant .....NOT
Probably because until very recently, abortion was legal here?
Women die from abortions. Worst cases was Dr. Gosnell in his house of horrors abortion clinic. Other abortion centers where women end up with punctured Uterus, baby parts left in them, botched abortions.
Meant to say legal nationwide here.
Further this author ignores that the dentist was having a miscarriage and her treatment was mismanaged and her sepsis treated too late. A miscarriage has nothing to do with elective abortion.
The lies, the campaign of fear, uncertainty and doubt will cloud the airwaves and social media. This propaganda piece has nothing to do with “women’s rights” it’s about asserting control and keeping “birthing people” in line.
If only the airplane had been invented by then...
I remember this case. It was not honestly presented. Here is some info from when it happened.
https://www.liveaction.org/news/whats-the-truth-about-savita-halappanavar/
“Either way she had an illegal abortion and it killed her.”
No, medical incompetence is what killed her:
“When, on Oct. 23, Halappanavar and her husband, Praveen, asked about medically inducing the miscarriage instead of delaying the inevitable, a doctor told them: “Under Irish law, if there’s no evidence of risk to the life of the mother, our hands are tied so long as there’s a fetal heart[beat],” the official report said.”
Yet she was told this AFTER the water had broke and she was in “unbearable” pain, so there clearly was some risk to her life, the doctors just didn’t make the correct decision.
Hiring a contract killer to slaughter your baby SHOULD be dangerous ... If more people knew the true horror of abortion, fewer people would attempt it.
“I also heard that they didn’t have a defibrillator or a surgeon with admitting privileges at a hospital. In other words, a dentist’s office was safer than the abortion clinic.”
I imagine of all the specializations in medicine, “abortionist” is not the most sought after position for talented people. Doctors who end up there are probably the equivalent of “ambulance chaser” lawyers.
This is stupid. Everyone knows that once the waters break, you have 24 hours max.
Correction of headline: American birthing persons fear...
In the US yes. Even before Roe
In an abortion, someone ALWAYS dies.
60,000,000 and counting.
The story is being misreported by US media for political purposes.
Savita Halappanavar died in Galway University Hospital on October 28th 2012. Three separate inquiries into her death found that she died of sepsis – an infection of the blood caused by an extremely virulent bacteria, Ecoli ESBL, rarely seen in Irish maternal health services. The HSE inquiry also found that the bacteria was also the most likely cause of Savita’s miscarriage.
The inquiries found that Savita’s case had been medically mismanaged in the hospital, with the HIQA inquiry pointing to 13 missed opportunities to save her life. The evidence that emerged from those inquiries is presented below, and is a clear and factual account of this tragic case.
Note
The reports referred to in this summary are:
The HIQA Report – the findings of the investigative report by the Health Information and Quality Authority
The HSE Report – the findings of the investigative report by the Health Service Executive
The Coroner’s Court - the findings of the Coroner ’s Court inquest into the death of Ms Halappanavar
Savita presents at Galway University Hospital
Yep, this is a quack doctor story much moreso than an abortion story.
Free healthcare, worth what you pay for it.
I’m not sure why a Man would get so worked up over this and then write a article on how horrible it is unless he is banging 12 yr olds and needs Abortion on Demand to stay out of Prison or an angry Fathers crosshairs??
Gosnell comes to mind.
