'City gonna burn': Akron police fire tear gas to quell rioters after black man, 27, was shot 60 times and killed by cops following chase as union reveals victim was involved in ANOTHER pursuit the day before

Police in Akron, Ohio, unleashed a wave of tear gas on protesters who gathered outside of the city's main courthouse on Sunday night.

Several hundred protesters marched in the city in the hours after the Akron Police Department released the bodycam footage showing the shooting death of 25-year-old Jayland Walker.

Walker was killed after being shot at least 60 times by Akron cops following a traffic stop on June 27.

Riot police used tear gas in response to a protester who was taking down barriers that were set up outside of the police headquarters. Authorities responded by coming out in 'full riot gear,' reports WKYC.

While fleeing the tear gas, protesters began driving their cars on the sidewalk to get around snowplows parked in the road to block off the high street - and some protesters launched smoke bombs in the streets, reports the Akron Beacon Journal.

One protester began breaking the windows of several snowplows whilst a row of dumpsters was also pictured on fire, although there does not appear to be any major damage to property in the city.

WKYC's Neil Fischer said that police used 'at least a dozen' tear gas cans on protesters which resulted in many of the gathered crowd leaving the area. Fisher said that you could smell the tear gas in the air more than 15 minutes after it was used.

Fellow WKYC reporter Emma Henderson tweeted: 'Tear gas is flowing. We were well over a block away from where it was fired and it's in our noses, eyes and throats. Protesters are finding each other water and moving away.'

One protester, who goes by the moniker Comrade Ohio on Twitter, tweeted a video showing a dumpster on fire in the city.

I live between Akron and Cleveland, and know this area. As you all know, Ohio is a red state, and our cops are generally supported by our community. You may remember after the Floyd shooting, other large cities came under attack. Cleveland was shut down for a few days and saw minimal damage. We took a pro-active stance and it worked.

Yesterday, the Fourth of July Akron Rib Fest was cancelled, and today the city fireworks and local Rubber Ducks ballgame are off. There are protesters, but not too many. It feels a lot like Cleveland after the Floyd shooting.

If riots ensue, I expect them to be quickly addressed. The streets are presently barricaded with large vehicles, some of which have broken windows. But as of the moment, the city is secure and there is no further damage.

We’d all appreciate your prayers.

Oh you’re so cute.

What you failed to grasp is that 1 shot might not kill you. Going to 60 stinks of “make sure he’s dead”. And that’s murder.

Now let’s see if you can understand.

How many reloads does sixty shots require? And how many shots can be fired before the gun gets too hot?

To answer your first question, none, if 8 cops are shooting. You can expect each cop to have at least 10 rounds in his magazine, and I would think most have more.

To answer your second, they don’t get too hot to shoot. Guns are made that way.

Nothing can be made to resist heat fatigue from overuse. And since when does any law enforcement department have an unlimited budget for ammunition?

To say he was shot “following a traffic stop” leaves out about twelve steps in between the stop and the shooting, but we don’t want to talk about that, naturally.

Yeah cause I studiously avoid any contact with cops. We live in a world where cops are weaponized. SWATing is a crime because people realized you could fake a scary “tip” and get the cops to kill somebody for you. The cops have shot a woman they were doing a wellness check on. Wellness check! Not to mention all the no-knock warrants on wrong addresses.

Cops are a threat. They’re not on our side, they’re dangerous, and you should avoid them as much as possible.

Yep.

Our shooting instructor also trained Akron area cops. He taught us that if we genuinely feared for our lives, we should aim for center mass and empty our magazines. Even with multiple gun shot wounds, a suspect can, and often does, return fire.

You had 8 officers respond as they were trained, each of them shooting at someone who posed a credible threat. They each aimed for center mass until their magazines were emptied. It all happened in a matter of seconds.

It sounds brutal to the public, but they simply would not live long as cops if they stopped to reassess the threat every time one person fired a round. And they would face consequences for breaking their training, especially if a fellow officer got shot as a result.

Racist?? When I start seeing and hearing black role models and leaders condemning their own for this constant bullshit, then I’ll give your statement an ounce of respect. until then?? pfffft... you get nothing...

You think the number of bullets makes a difference? If they killed him with one shot, that wouldn’t be
murder, but 60 would?” How peculiar.

It does make a difference. Which I’ve outlined multiple times in this thread.

That’s the problem, far too often cops ARE lynch mobs.

You get lynch mobs when people lose confidence in the justice system. When criminals get arrested and released before the arrest report is finished. When cops get shot at, and the shooter is excused.

This particular shooter will not be a threat to anyone, any more.

And I see your point about rogue cops, but then I see the January 6th protesters languishing in jail for a year and a half over a simple trespass, so I've ALREADY lost faith in the system. In any event, my attitude over this particular guy is "Good riddance".

They’re job is NOT execution. If they don’t understand that they shouldn’t have that job. They’re entrusted with too much power to get decide they don’t trust the justice system. They are the iron fist of the justice system, if they don’t trust it they should quit.

You notice we never get this kind of crap from military police. Which is funny since you know they’re in the military first and are trained to kill. But MPs are also trained to NOT kill. And face incredibly stiff accountability with automatic reviews of almost any use of force and very high penalties for being found in the wrong. Time for lots of that in civilian police. Accountability. they have a high duty, they need to be up to it.

At least some of those bullets had to be hitting somebody that wasn’t moving. That’s murder.

HAHA - yeah, because after three, the guy just gets deader and deaderer.

So long as one avoids the manner of “contact” this Jayland Walker initiated, one should be fine.

I would agree, though, in the case where David Wood and the late Nabeel Qureshi were unlawfully arrested in Dearborn MI twelve years ago. Cops are never to act as the goon squad for elected or (especially) appointed officials.

There are still big consequences if one is a SWATter.

Maybe it was like in that movie “In Broad Daylight”. The perp shot first and the cops all unloaded at once so that nobody will have to take the blame. Could be a result of the war on cops.

No. You’re not. That’s my point.

The consequences to the SWATter aren’t nearly as high as to the SWATtie.

Really the fact that SWATting even exists should cause the police of America to have a serious gut check. All of their conventions should have had as topic #1 at all of their conventions should have been “the American people have figured out how to use us as a weapon, this is bad”. But of course, modern American police don’t think they could possibly be the problem, we’re the problem. Which is how we get stuff like this:
https://www.seattle.gov/police/need-help/swatting

So there’s the Seattle PD saying “if you think somebody might SWAT you, register here, and we’ll review your application to not have your door kicked in and get shot out of hand, and if we approve when somebody does call in a tip, we’ll check the DB, and if you’re in it we’ll be less aggressive”.

I means... what the actual $%^&. This is where our policing has gotten to. We have “please don’t kill me” databases.

Anyway, there are burgers to be made, beer to be consumed. Thanks for being able to disagree with me on this thread without being rude. I appreciate. Stay healthy. Happy Independence Day.

I don’t mind answering questions, as you seem to have honest questions. I’m no expert, but I am familiar with firearms and have had proper training.

The barrel of a firearm gets hot when repeatedly fired, but the grip of the gun is not metalic, and it does not get hot. Likewise, the slide of the firearm does not get hot. So, that parts that the shooter touch do not get hot. In a situation like this, it’s a non-issue.

Also, apparently 80 rounds were fired. Even without a bulk discount, that’s less than $50.00. I’m sure even frugal police departments budget for significantly more ammo than that.
