Our shooting instructor also trained Akron area cops. He taught us that if we genuinely feared for our lives, we should aim for center mass and empty our magazines. Even with multiple gun shot wounds, a suspect can, and often does, return fire.
You had 8 officers respond as they were trained, each of them shooting at someone who posed a credible threat. They each aimed for center mass until their magazines were emptied. It all happened in a matter of seconds.
It sounds brutal to the public, but they simply would not live long as cops if they stopped to reassess the threat every time one person fired a round. And they would face consequences for breaking their training, especially if a fellow officer got shot as a result.
The teaching moment for the agitators is that the perpetrator had eluded the day before, was armed and had shot at the police. If any agitators feel like they can do the same to the police in the next wave, the Officers should follow their training and stop the problem, with deadly force if necessary. That is the only persuasion that the rioters understand - immediate consequences for their actions.
