I'm in Oklahoma and appreciate the politics (Constitutional Carry; outlawed abortion) but don't like the weather.
I've lived in Florida, Ohio, Alabama, North Carolina, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky and California. I like the weather in Michigan and California but don't like the politics.
I'd like milder summers and can handle cold winters. Long spring and fall weather is good.
Retirement age and all, so good medicine is important.
By the time we make the move (~2 to 3 years, likely) whatever adjustment the housing market will make will be done. Don't anticipate having to finance anything, etc.
Also, I'm a firearms "accumulator." Carry concealed 90% of the time and that's important. Constitutional firearms laws are always important.

Parks is in the mountains. Wont be a problem up there.
We actually have ~500 acres in north/north central OK. We’re about to cut our first cutting for hay. I’ll have to explore wheat.
Up until recently I wintered in Florida and summers in Colombia SA. Not sure of my next step
Great plan...East Tennessee is a great place to live...
It’s a well known secret that retirees to Florida who cannot acclimate to the heat end up in North Carolina. The preferred area is the border region between Tennessee and north carolina. So extreme East Tennessee or extreme west north carolina. The Smokey mountain area is the best. For those who need city life the preferred city is Asheville or its suburbs and nearby towns in the Smokey mountain vicinity.
There is an added benefit of no mosquitoes. It’s rumored to be some mineral or nutrient lacking in the soil or water that stunts the mosquito population. It’s not due to spraying or modern industry; this area has always and forever been naturally devoid of mosquitos.
Summers are very mild. Winter does exist but it is also mild.

I built a log house behind Lambert Acres Golf Course on Lambert Road in 1984...Lived there until 1990...
Nice! I drive by there on the way to White’s Mill wildlife refuge, which probably was established after you left. It’s neither very large nor very special, but I’ve been there a few times. I much prefer Kyker Bottoms wildlife refuge between Lanier and Chilhowee lake. I don’t golf but the mountains are a fantastic backdrop to Lambert acres golf course, though.

Wow!!! I just looked at the map around Maryville...That White’s Mill Refuge is right behind my old log house!!!
It borders up to what was my pastures in back of the house...How about that???
That big flat area used to be pasture for a man who had stables near the end of Camelot Dr...

But still a great place to live. Just have a block home. A good insect company and termite annual treatments. You’ll be good to go. Of course living the the middle of the state helps in the Hurricane department.

Yes, I have. Both of mine are gone.
I love my children, but they think I have one foot in the grave already, and I’m 62, no health problems whatsoever. I’m afraid they’ll try to stick me in an old folks home as soon as they can. They think I should be taking naps, and I don’t do that. I work hard to stay in shape so they won’t need to take care of me. I know at some point that’ll change but I intend to do my part in holding that off for another 20+ years if I can, even 30 years, God willing.
