I'm in Oklahoma and appreciate the politics (Constitutional Carry; outlawed abortion) but don't like the weather.
I've lived in Florida, Ohio, Alabama, North Carolina, Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee, Kentucky and California. I like the weather in Michigan and California but don't like the politics.
I'd like milder summers and can handle cold winters. Long spring and fall weather is good.
Retirement age and all, so good medicine is important.
By the time we make the move (~2 to 3 years, likely) whatever adjustment the housing market will make will be done. Don't anticipate having to finance anything, etc.
Also, I'm a firearms "accumulator." Carry concealed 90% of the time and that's important. Constitutional firearms laws are always important.

Yep. It’s on my radar. Loved TN when we visited family. I hope not to be stuck in ill IL forever.
Sounds nice. Though it comes to mind that Ms is known to be one of the poorer and higher crime states if I remember correctly.
This all sounds very nice! How close are the rivers? Are they super fast or tending towards lazy? I have a few persnickety things that I’d like to have convenience to. Do you have Publix near you? That’s one thing I really miss about the south.
We took a trip to Cosby, TN in late February thinking it might be close enough and far enough from Knoxville. Turned out that we hated Gatlinburg and even Sevierville wasn’t much better. So we are back to looking in SE Tennessee (Cleveland general area). We ran into some folks from Murphy last week, and they said the same about health care. While we are in great shape right now, we know that can change at any time. I’ve felt that as long as decent health care is within 35 minutes, you’re good to go, but to me Murphy sounds like it’s further than that. The area sounds beautiful though.
I think there’s nothing wrong with asking your fellow forum peeps for advice or recommendations on such a topic. I don’t find it too personal at all. This thread has been interesting to read and informative. Thanks OP.
I normally recommend east Tennessee but the latitude and thus the weather is similar and he apparently seeks warmer weather.
I like the quiet and Hill Country views and it is cool in the evenings if you are on a mountain. Winters can be cold.
Nice people that leave you alone and watch out for each other if needed.

Benton, TN used to have speed limit signs on 411 highway going through “downtown” that read 34 MPH...LOL I kid you not...

Ah, this is something that is coming up for me in just a few months. I will be moving back to my beloved swamps in Mississippi and Louisiana. And,when I get back there, I thoroughly intend to pull in the Welcome mat and put Posted signs on the gate.

Publix is down here, not everywhere but thy are here, lots of rivers and streams some fast some slow, really, a great place to live, blacks and whites walk down the sidewalk together, no noticeable graffiti, this is small town rural America, My hometown is like a cross between mayberry and the dukes of hazard.

Yeah, it’s not a lot higher now. Maybe 45 on at least 4 lanes with no one in sight. Pure speed trap. Only Waldo, FL beats that.

Mayberry? That’s where I live now! The sorta recent movie “Mayberry Man” was filmed partly in our town. It was fun to see the places where I live in the movie.

You’re welcome to come anytime. Central/western New Hampshire is a great place to be. Lots of Conservatives. Up north in the White mountains is good if you don’t need a job . But it’s beautiful and quiet. Except tourist season. Any farther south than Henniker is Boston north. Even that is creeping up. Stay away from the socialist bastions of Hanover /Lebanon. That’s near Dartmouth College. OMG. It’s a nightmare.
I have no secrets, it is Stevenson Alabama, a train depot at the heart of the civil war, burnt and rebuilt several times, had a union and confederate headquarters on each end of town.
We’ve traveled around a lot. Almost 30 years ago we decided to pick some place to settle down. We narrowed it down to three of our favorite spots: Maryville, Tennessee; Johnson City, Tennessee; and Boone, North Carolina. We decided on the Maryville area. We bought a place on the Little River between Maryville and the Mountains. We live 11 miles from the park boundary, about 5 miles from Maryville, and about 20 miles from Knoxville. No regrets. During the past couple of decades, there has been a noticeable influx of outsiders. Most have been from purplish states, like Ohio or Michigan. In recent years there have been more escapees from blue states like California. However, most are conservative escapees. As the area has grown, it has perhaps lost a twinge of its quaint charm. However, checking around outlying towns such as Seymour or Walland should still yield very desirable results. West Tennessee is not a prime choice. Middle Tennessee is somewhat better, but you have to be selective. East Tennessee is the best. Because of the change in plant communities and topography, I would recommend no farther south than Madisonville, if even that far.
