It's been 130 days since WNBA star Brittney Griner was detained in Russia and her trial is about to start. Her wife wants US officials to do more to bring her home

Cherelle Griner, the wife of WNBA star Brittney Griner, told CNN on Thursday she wants US officials to do whatever they have to do to bring the basketball legend home -- and she needs to see them do more.

In the only interview she is giving on the eve of her wife's trial in Russia, Cherelle Griner sat in the Phoenix Mercury locker room and called for more action.

"It's really, really difficult. This is not a situation where the rhetoric is matching the action," she said. "I do have to unfortunately push people to make sure that the things they're telling me is also matching their actions and so it's been the hardest thing to balance because I can't let up. It's over 130 days and BG's still not back."

Brittney Griner, 31, who has played in Russia during the WNBA's offseason, was arrested February 17 at a Moscow airport. Russian authorities claimed she had cannabis oil in her luggage and accused her of smuggling significant amounts of a narcotic substance, an offense punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

She’s played in Russia in the off season? So she should have been well aware of their drug policies and laws, more than the average American tourist. I wonder if this will figure into the case against her. They’re probably looking for witnesses to testify she did drugs while she was in the country previously.

Evidently she broke Russian laws while in Russia, right before a shooting war broke out and tensions between the two countries were pretty bad.
Is her detention a load of garbage, absolutely, but you should never intentionally put a target on your back.
Check your attitude, your ego and your privilege and follow the rules.
Then you could have been back home talking shit about America and being celebrated for it.
I wonder if this person will figure out that she has more value to these people sitting in jail in Russia than she does being free in America.

Just a thought.... Maybe if you want to visit a country, you shouldn’t break its laws.

She will be convicted and sentenced to ten years, however, she is a most valuable bargaining chip. Russia will probably be able to get several prisoners released in a swap.

Think about it. A black gay female, or gay black female. There is no way this administration can say no to the deal. The fallout would be too much.

“I honestly feel we should not play the national anthem during our season. I think we should take that much of a stand.”

Well Russia doesn’t play the American national anthem so you’re all good there…

"I believe Americans should be caned in countries that have canings for crimes."

Personally, I would much prefer to be caned than to be separated from my family and friends for years.

50 years ago, when I did some traveling, a more experienced friend said, “Always do drugs in your own country.”

I looked around, and decided it was 50-50 as to whether some dirtbag local was really just trying to sell me a little weed, or whether he was considering turning me in to the hypocritical local police for a bigger profit. Americans were starting to be bargaining chips and profit centers. It’s a trend that accelerated during the Clinton and Obama years, when the American embassies often seemed to be useless in helping Americans who had been grabbed overseas.

In the good old days of the British Empire, seizing citizens abroad might initiate a “punitive expedition.” Those days are long gone.

Might be “interesting” to know her real opinions about America pre-arrest versus post arrest, assuming she is even released without being sentenced to prison, which is not a sure thing.

Stories are legion about clueless Americans getting tangled up in foreign legal snafus. This is not an insignificant matter - and it is part and parcel of the modern “educational system”.

The brute fact of the matter is Americans enjoy fundamental rights (at least on paper) that are completely alien to much of the world. We here in America are “losing” (read: stolen) our rights here, because we have taken them for granted. We thought they were etched in stone. I include myself in this category. It never occurred to me that anyone would wish to take them away, for the most part.

Among them: The presumption of innocence. In our system, it is up to the state to prove the individual is guilty of the offense he is charged with. In virtually every other country, it is up to the individual to prove his innocence.

The right to counsel. The right to face ones accuser. Prohibitions on excessive bail. We’ve seen countless abuses of this in the Kangaroo Kollege Kourts - and they have rolled them out nationwide. Supposedly intelligent commentators on the “news” said mere unproven accusations from 30 years ago are sufficient to ruin your life.

Anyway, it is amusing (sort of) to see idiot shit-talkers get busted in foreign countries, thinking they will enjoy the same rights “over there” as they do in America. Oops!

The dyke is a criminal who broke the laws and being American does not resolve the problem of her guilt

The State Department dare not intercede

“Was the narcotics she smuggled cannabis oil?”

Oil with THC, the ingredient that gets you high, and is used to ‘vape’ instead of smoke. Easier to get away with, unless dope sniffing dogs are around. No odor when vaping.

I know...I can’t believe she wants to come back to such a racist, oppressive country such as the US.

“Because they know that dummies such as you and Brittany will STILL vote for them.”

WTF! you can say a lot of crap on this website, but don’t ever accuse someone of voting for Biden. My opinion is that if she broke the law she should pay the price. So before you call someone a dummie look in the mirror.

... this reeks of a straight up North Korea style move to take a US citizen on BS charges so you can use them as a bargaining chip.

No, she smuggled illegal drugs into the country.

As for North Korea style tactics; the U.S. government does that - taking the January 6th protesters on BS charges and keeping them in solitary confinement for 17 months.

one man and and one women plus 3 to 4 children are Russia’s goals,

Russis has the highest abortion in the world and their birth rate is among the lowest in the world. They are past the point of no return with regard to population stability.

I guess they could send Hunter over to straighten this out.

Thanks. I didn't know about oil with THC.

I have no doubt the drugs were planted on her. Whatever else you may think of her, she’s no jerk and she’s well aware of the things you don’t do in foreign travel.

The Russians needed a bargaining chip.

Sorry Cherelle, but you will have to wait for a competent president before you get any results. President Trump managed to get the UCLA shoplifting basketball players home before they saw the inside of cell.
