EU Imports More U.S. LNG Than Russian Pipeline Gas For The First Time Ever

For the first time ever, the European Union has imported in June more liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States than gas via pipeline from Russia, as Moscow slashed supply to Europe earlier this month, Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), said on Thursday.

“The drop in Russian supply calls for efforts to reduce EU demand to prepare for a tough winter,” the head of the Paris-based agency added.

In April 2022 alone, five European countries—France, Spain, the UK, the Netherlands, and Poland—accounted for 54.1% of total U.S. LNG exports, data from the U.S. Energy Department showed earlier this month.

Despite the record intake of American, and other, LNG, Europe still faces supply troubles this winter if it doesn’t take measures to conserve energy, analysts and the IEA say.

Europe faces a “red alert” for gas supply next winter, Birol said earlier in June.

“Recent disruptions to natural gas supplies, notably Russia steeply cutting flows to EU countries, is set to remove around 35 billion cubic metres of gas from the market this year, posing big challenges to efforts to refill storage. This is a red alert for the EU for next winter, Birol tweeted in mid-June.

LNG is at least 5 times the price of pipeline gas. Guess that’s the fee you have to pay if you wanna be obnoxious and spread NATO and the empire.

Japan is telling their people to start conserving power, so at least we know who’s no longer getting our gas, and will pay the price for the Neocon adventure in Ukraine.

Now that the US has exceeded Russia in exports, Joe and his CCP Whitehouse needs to cripple our exports. Explosions and fires have to be expected.

“Japan is telling their people to start conserving power”

Japan is probably the most energy poor major economy, in terms of domestic natural resources. They are critically dependent on imports.

They are going to continue their Natural gas projects on Sakhalin Island and the Russian Far East, even as many other nations have withdrawn from Russian projects.

In a sea change however, since the start of the war in Ukraine this year, they have decided to begin re-developing their nuclear power generation, which was greatly scaled back after the Fukushima disaster in 2011.

Henry Hub piped gas is 5.56 per mmBtu, and TTF Netherlands August futures is at 43.225 per mmBtu.

That's only 8 times the price.

They're giving LNG away.  face with tears of joy face with tears of joy face with tears of joy

I guess the LNG Pollyannas of FR kind of forgot that crucial little detail...

Won’t help them this winter, due to our sanctions, but still good to hear. I guess the Greens there aren’t running things (yet).

Say, I wonder why the reporter chicklette Tsvetana Paraskova forgot to mention the current and FUTURE price of LNG versus piped natgas?

January TTF Netherlands futures are looking particularly rosy - if you're selling LNG on the spot market [spot is kind of a condition of LNG].

I called up my natural gas supplier today and DEMANDED that I be charged $5.60 a therm, instead of the already inflated 70 cents a therm.

Just doing my bit for the war effort.

I figure my January natgas bill will be 1400 bucks, instead of the usual 200-300 dollars.

I can feel Saint Zel blessing me already, and it gives me the Warm Fuzzies to know that there will also be 12 percent [inflation!] for The Big Guy.

“Henry Hub piped gas is 5.56 per mmBtu (Oklahoma), and TTF Netherlands (Europe) August futures is at 43.225 per mmBtu.”

Yep, much of that difference is due to the Freeport Terminal going pop (probably due to the feds demanding that they cut corners for more deliveries to Europe). If we can’t export our gas to Europe, we’re stuck having a surplus here, so sorry Biden, your Globalist friends may be killing us on gasoline and food prices, but natural gas is in surplus, and there’s not a damn thing you can do about it.

By the way, for others, multiple the mmBTU (million BTU) number by 6 to get the equivalent price for the same energy in barrels of oil, so $33/barrel ($0.80/gallon) for the United States, and $258/barrel (or $6.00/gallon) in Europe. Seems to me that the Neocon ‘Sanctions on Russia’ are doing a STELLAR job of punishing EUROPEANS.

Even so, the article does mention that LNG tankers are being redirected from Asia to Europe as Europe is willing to pay more.

How is the idea of re-developing some nuclear power playing in Japan (politically, public opinion)? Popular or not? Urgent or not?

It is Putin, your dictator Putin who is trying to spread his empire.

Every one of the countries that joined NATO did so freely a d requested to join it.

This is unlike those in alliance with Russia.

Estonia joined NATO to prevent Russia invading it, and they are/were right. Russia invades its non NATO neighbours.
