Possibilities include:
- Son is rebelling against father's methods.
- Son has some learning disability
- Dad is bad at math and teaching son wrong.
- Dad is teaching basic mathematics but test is focusing on properties of mathematics like the distributive property or the commutative property.
- Dad failed to find out what was actually being taught and/or how test is structured.

Don’t know what the Chinese test looks like, but on most exams, it would take a real effort to score 6% (assuming 94% of the test wasn’t left blank).

The poor guy didn’t understand that there are some people who love and glory in math while there are others who loathe, despise, and abominate it. I am in the latter group while my mother was in the former, even though I am a male. That just proves that the stereotype of women being bad at math and men being good at it is nothing but a stereotype where there are always major individual exceptions. This poor guy just has to understand that his son is not now and never will be a mathematician and direct his son into some other line of work.
