Florida Sailcats hurt like hell!...................
Poor kid! Hope he’s OK. He can then join me, and others, as we avoid open water at all costs!
If I can’t swim to shore, I ain’t gettin’ in the boat! ;)
Those guys that are in the water catching them with their hands are crazy
Great way to avoid shark attacks, is to avoid sharks heh.
I get it, I like these ideas.
I’ve been jabbed in the foot and ankle by several catfish in the past. Hurt like hell. I’m thinking this kid picked up the catfish and then slipped or tripped and fell on top him and getting his chest impelled by the sharp dorsal fin.
Who knew there were venomous catfish?
“Florida Sailcats hurt like hell”
For anyone that might not know, this is a salt water fish.
Been salt water fishing my whole life. Saw my dad get hit on the back of the hand by one once...that was as close as I ever wanted to get.
I’ve always used a hook/ loop type deal fashioned out of a coat hanger....hook it around the line right at the fish’s mouth and flip away from your body....catfish comes off every time and you never have to handle that sucker.....I’ve never been finned...ever.
Jeez! Meant impaled.
I had a fin from a hardhead get jammed into my thumb. Right hand. My whole arm went numb for a couple of hours.
Catfish have huge spines on their pectorial fins that prevent them from being swollowed tail first.
They usually break off after the fish is over a foot or so long.
You can get serious infections from the other spines but it’s nothing like a stingray.
“guys that are in the water catching them with their hands are crazy”
That’s fresh water....this kid was finned by a saltwater catfish.
Noodling.
” The child “ ?
The article never says if “ the child “ is a girl, or a boy.
PC is completely out-of-control.
I know the feeling. I always take hydrogen peroxide fishing with me if I get finned or I’ll just pour some coca cola on it if I get stabbed by a fin. It usually happens when they’re flopping in the bottom of the boat while trying to pick them up and throw em in the cooler.
“Who knew there were venomous catfish?”
Um...I’ve known it practically my while life.
“I’ve always used a hook/ loop type deal fashioned out of a coat hanger....hook it around the line right at the fish’s mouth and flip away from your body....catfish comes off every time and you never have to handle that sucker.....I’ve never been finned...ever.”
I’ve heard about the “flipper” thing but never tried it.
I always get a hardhead down on some flat surface, have an old piece denim pant leg, wad that up press down on fish real hard, use pliers to remove hook, then use pliers on lip of fish an toss back in water.
My wife and I were walking along the beach one night here near Destin and I stepped on a dead sailcat that some dumbass fisherman had discarded ON THE BEACH!.....
Went right thru my flip-flop and into my foot!
It hurt for a month or more.
Pulling it out was more painful than when I stepped on it!..................
One time my brother was in the emergency room for something, the patient in the next bay came in with a catfish stuck on his foot by the barb. I don’t know why he didn’t cut the fish off and just have the barb attached before he arrived. My brother said he thinks every doctor and nurse in the hospital had to “consult” on that treatment (i.e. look at the fish on the foot).
