Mark Shields, the longtime political commentator who was a decades-long fixture on “PBS Newshour,” died Saturday at age 85.
News of his death was shared on Twitter by Newshour anchor Judy Woodruff.
“I am heartbroken to share this,” she said in the tweet, stating that for decades, Shields “wowed us with his encyclopedic knowledge of American politics, his sense of humor and mainly his big heart.”
She said he died with his wife Anne at his side.
Shields first appeared on “The MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour” during the 1988 presidential election and became a weekly guest.
From 2001 to his retirement in 2020, he appeared each Friday with The New York Times columnist David Brooks to analyze and comment on the week’s political news. Prior to Brooks, his counterparts included the late William Safire, Paul Gigot of the Wall Street Journal and former presidential adviser David Gergen

I liked Jack Germond a lot better, he was a real reporter, like Robert Novak and his partner Rollie Evans.
Shields was a political operative that became a talking head, like Carville or Stephanopoulos and
RE: Jack Germond....
Haven’t thought of him for a while now. Was affable guy on the air.
I remember his line “the Presidential address to Congress always is more or less forgotten and ignored. Like wetting your pants while you’re wearing a dark blue suit. It gives you a warm feeling but practically no one else notices it.”
A panel member said: “Hey, Jack. Are you speaking from personal experience?”
I heard of the guy, not too impressive.
Intense yet thick liberal columnist. Prototype for today’s leftists.
The Left awarded him the Eternal Democrat Vote.
Like they do with all dead people.
It's an individual thing....I guess.
There's a few I would as you did...say "Good riddance"...but I did not know the man.....So I will stay silent......on that.
Old school democrat from when America was still America. Loathsome opinions and views but you could have a convivial beer with him after work. Ex Marine. They don’t make them like that anymore.
I like dead rats
Old school liberal who was an example of how a person can be wrong 100% of the time without being obnoxious about it. Today’s progressives have added obnoxious to their witch’s brew of wrongheadedness.
I am not sure what surprises me more to hear that Shields or Woodruff was still alive.
He shouldn’t have been on public television all those years if he was a liberal.
Jack Germond you could have a beer with.
Screw Novak into the ground, he let Armitrage withhold the exonerating evidence that cleared Scooter Libby, ie, Armitrage did it, in Frank Luntz's ballroom with a candlestick.
Not saying Libby didn't deserve it, after snogging that NYT wench, but withholding evidence when Armitrage was to blame, Novak will be the welcoming committee for Dick. "Gosh, Bob, it's so hot here...A man of my fat stature could sure use a cold drink of water..."
Dead cats, dead rats
Think you’re an aristocrat
Crap, that’s crap!
LOL, cold drink of water.
I hadn’t thought of the Libby affair.
I liked the old school reporters and columnists like Joe Sobraon, William Safire, John P. Roche or Charly Reed a lot better than today’s breed.
Fred Reed is another good writer, he can rile you but he’s competent and articulate.
Fred Reed still round?
I thought he had retired from writing and\or passed on.
Yes, his writing was\is at times aggravating.
