Buzz Lightyear (voice of Chris Evans) is best friends with Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba), a lesbian character in a same-sex relationship in the Disney/Pixar film “Lightyear,” which has been banned in territories in the Middle East and Asia.
Disney and Pixar Animation Studios’ decision to refuse to re-edit or alter depiction of a same-sex relationship in the new film “Lightyear” is continuing to reverberate — and those repercussions now include a ban on the film’s release in territories in the Middle East and West Asian territories.
This week, decision makers in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Malaysia were among those that confirmed that the $200 million film would be banned.
“Lightyear,” the Emeryville studio’s first theatrical release since March 2020, is set to open in the United States and other major territories on Friday, June 17. A subplot near the beginning of the film involves Buzz Lightyear’s fellow space ranger and best friend, Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba), and her relationship with a colleague, who becomes her wife. At one point, the couple kiss onscreen.
The film’s ban is the latest in a monthslong debate over LGBTQ themes in Disney films, a “controversy” that exasperates “Lightyear” director Angus MacLane.
“The controversy is whether or not you think it’s appropriate for people to love each other,” MacLane told The Chronicle before the Middle East and Asian bans were announced. “That’s a thing that’s a controversy? I don’t know where to begin on that one. What is important to us is to have these characters that were fully formed and essential to the film.”
Also before the bans, actor Chris Evans, who voices Buzz Lightyear, told Variety, “It’s tough to not be a little frustrated that it even has to be a topic of discussion. That it is this kind of ‘news.’ The goal is that we can get to a point where it is the norm, and that this doesn’t have to be some uncharted waters, that eventually this is just the way it is. That representation across the board is how we make films.”
Pixar did not respond to a Chronicle request on Wednesday, June 15, for comment on the bans.
“isney and other studios regularly re-edit films to conform with local censorship laws around the world to avoid outright bans. That was the plan with “Lightyear” as well, until an open letter in March by “the LGBTQIA+ employees of Pixar, and their allies” criticized Di
