Hidden message on Polk County headstone raises concerns

It may not look like it at first glance, but a headstone on the Warren-Powers Cemetery in Polk County has a hidden message.

"Forever in our hearts, until we meet again, cherished memories, known as our brother, father, papa, uncle, friend, and cousin," said Lindsay Owens, daughter of the late Steven Owens.

If you pay special attention to the headstone, you'll notice that the first letter of each phrase reads 'F--- off.'

It's something that Steven Owens' family members say he often said jokingly.

"It was definitely his term of endearment. If he didn't like you, he didn't speak to you. It's just who he was," Lindsay Owens said.

"He's easily riled up. It was always a goal of some sort to have him tell you to do this," said Zachary Owens, Steven's son.

Steven's family said that the epitaph is something his family did as a harmless way to remember him, but it has now been called into question by the cemetery.

You’re right. It’s unbelievable.

The Rodney Dangerfield inscription “There Goes The Neighborhood” is very funny but it would offend some.

No, it’s a verse from ‘The Ballad of Reading Gaol’ written after he was released.

But the tradition of kissing the stone and leaving lipstick marks has caused them to put up some kind of barrier so people can’t do that. The lipstick was damaging it.

Anyone offended by the message probably needs to read it anyway.

Sure are a lot of Nervous Nellies policing our lives. Seems to be a lot of people who want - more that anything - to control what we do or say or put on our families' headstones.

The definition of a Puritan: "someone who is concerned that someone, somewhere may be having a good time".

https://www2.ljworld.com/news/2010/jun/18/man-curses-democrats-120-year-old-grave/

“Man curses Democrats from 120-year-old grave

Nathaniel Grigsby died 120 years ago, but in a cemetery near Attica on the southern Kansas plains, the farmer still is cursing the Democratic Party from the grave.

‘Through this inscription I wish to enter my dying protest against what is called the Democratic party. I have watched it closely since the days of Jackson and know that all the misfortunes of our nation have come to it through this so called party. Therefore, beware of this party of treason.’”

People have always put funny or snide things on gravestones.

Especially when it’s more or less hidden like this - and WAS a common sentiment of the deceased - I have no problem with it. It isn’t like a vanity license plate to which everyone on the road is exposed.

I think some busybody was just looking to be offended and to complain.

KCC out of Des Moines, so I’m guessing Iowa. Ridiculous in this internet age not to have a dateline with location.

I’ve noticed that many Internet articles lack a dateline. Like proofreading, it’s one of the rules of journalism that’s just ignored now.

😁

I was actually at Tombstone many years ago and went to Boot Hill. As I recall, there wasn’t much to the town or the cemetery.

Words are seeds that are planted. Time goes by, and they’re harvested. Good or bad.

I remember when I was a little girl, Dad would say to me when we were placing flowers on family Graves on Memorial Day, “Do you want to see where I’m buried?” Sure enough, when I looked at the tombstone, it had the same name as his. Dad had been named after after his grandpa. (I had a hard time figuring that out.)

Years passed, and Mom and Dad died the same year. Both were in their 90s. My brother tried to find a burial plot for them that was near the relatives. None were available...

But then a peculiar thing happened. The cemetery owner decided to tear up an old sidewalk. The space was just the right size for Mom and Dad’s headstone, and it happened to be the same place where Dad said, Do you want to know where I’m buried?

SEED. TIME. HARVEST.
