'Jane Austen turns in her grave': Fans slam dumbed-down dialogue in Netflix's new adaptation of 1817 novel Persuasion starring Dakota Johnson - as characters chat about 'exes' and 'moving on'

Jane Austen fans were far from persuaded by Netflix's trailer for its upcoming adaptation of Persuasion. The streaming service released a two-minute-long trailer for the movie starring Dakota Johnson as the self-effacing heroine Anne Elliot, which is due to hit the screens on July 15.

In spite of being set in the 19th century, the dialogue in the movie adaptation uses modern phrases - such as referring to Anne's former flame Captain Frederik Wentworth, played by Cosmo Jarvis, as an 'ex,' which has not landed well with purists of the period romance genre.

Corin Redgrave as Sir Walter Elliot = absolutely perfect!

That is such a good movie.

The movie about Peter Rabbits creator ‘Miss Potter’ was a bit wokey too ...

I knew this was going to be awful when Netflix described Anne as a “non-conforming woman,”

Translation: She's a lesbo.

“... I believe we will need a “trend” in which people aspire to be very formal, very proper, very controlled in their behavior.”

This is probably the reason some of us are still royal watchers (mainly the British royal family, but there are others). Some of them may not behave well all the time in their personal lives, but they usually appear publicly well-groomed, well-dressed and well-mannered. It makes a nice change from all the tacky celebrity/famous people dreck we are bombarded with.

My wife is a huge Jane Austen fan, but she did not like the 1995 version of Persuasion. She did like the films of Sense & Sensibility (1995), Emma (1995) and Pride & Prejudice (2005 film and 1995 miniseries). We have reached a point in which filmmakers cannot be relied upon to faithfully adapt these stories.

Love the newer version with Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penny-Jones, but the BEST version - IMHO - is the 1995 Persuasion with Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds. Most excellently cast!

Won’t even bother with this latest and especially since it’s Netflix.

Has your wife seen Bride and Prejudice (2004)? The Bollywood version of P&P. Some might think it sacrilege but I thought it was fun.
