For many people, an author who is worth an estimated $800 million and has seen nearly a dozen of his original works made into big-budget films might be the definition of “success.” But James Patterson, the thriller novelist who checks all of the aforementioned boxes, seems to feel that his older white male peers don’t have the same chances in Hollywood as others these days because of ... racism?
In a new interview with the U.K’s The Times, as reported by Entertainment Weekly, Patterson described “another form of racism” he thinks older white men in his line of work face—racism that appears in the form of their difficulty securing a job in Hollywood and the publishing industry.
“What’s that all about?” he said. “Can you get a job? Yes. Is it harder? Yes. It’s even harder for older writers. You don’t meet many 52-year-old white males.”
The author found himself on the topic after the Times noted that much of Patterson’s initial success stemmed from his popular character Alex Cross, a Black detective and forensic psychologist who has been portrayed onscreen by Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry.
“I just wanted to create a character who happened to be Black,” Patterson said. “I would not have tried to write a serious saga about a Black family. It’s different in a detective story because plot is so important.”

He got his. So you go get yours.
Its not just hollywood its everywhere. Very little hiring is done at the local level, most hiring decisions are made at the corporate HR level and hiring older white males is not a priority.
Has MSN (or any legacy media) ever juxtaposed a rich black person’s net worth against claims of discrimination? Kind of proves Patterson’s point.
I’m sure there’s prejudice against older white male writers.
Opra. Worth over a billion, still complain incessantly about racism.
Wrong, it is ageism.
Yes. They write entertaining stories that you can follow along. They understand the basics of writing. This makes young Hollywood writers look like the incompetent frauds they are.
No, This is REAL. There is rampant anti-white discrimination and age discrimination in employment. God forbid an older white guy loses his job - it is next to impossible to get hired nowadays.
Don’t ask me how I know.
As a white Christian male in his 40s, I guess I should get started on that novel...
I beg to differ Sir. I am one old white man that’s a hugh priority for work. My wife of 50 year has me working my azz off. I was asked by another old white guy I used to work with how I like retirement. I told him “ beats the hell outa me, the old lady don’t let me alone and the pay sucks plus no breaks.” 🙄
Sadly, the United States of America is home to systemic/institutional racism/sexism, and its name is “affirmative action.”
Straight, white males are the only people it is legal to discriminate against, and discrimination against them is required by law.
And, simultaneously, straight, white males are “white supremacists.”
See how that works?
“Don’t ask me how I know.”
I work in Hollywood. Head to Netflix and for all the bullsh*t about racism, their entire marketing and production departments are WHITE.
and guess what? I know more than a few of them. One of them explained (a lefty) that in their circle, being white is a minority in L.A. So all the “upper guys” hired are 99% white.
because once they hire a “darky” , that will open the floodgates to hiring. As long as you are white, faggot, Dem you wont be fired..
No, it’s real. Hoodies are so stupid they believe old white people were slave owners.
People who are so set on getting revenge of old white guys should heed the old advice, “Dig two graves.”
“Its not just hollywood its everywhere. Very little hiring is done at the local level, most hiring decisions are made at the corporate HR level and hiring older white males is not a priority.”
I was listening in on a private conversation between a Deputy Sherrif and his late sixties buddy who the deputy had known since childhood. The elderly guy was talking about the bovine excrement ticket he’d just got. The deputy said, (approximatly) “I hate to say this but we do very little policing today. We are all tasked to go out and write tickets. Those who write the most get promoted. An elderly white man or woman is the best possible stop, since we must run wants and warrants. I’d only stop a car full of blacks if I absolutely had to. That’s because it’s very likely one of them has an outstanding warrant and it takes me off the road for the rest of the day. No more tickets.”
I work in Glendale...while that might be true in the entertainment industry and certain corporations, the smaller businesses are the worst.
Laid off at start of lockdowns, a few bites at the 400 or so applications over 2 years, but when they do the zoom interviews they see that you’re a white dude, and an older one at that. Then Ghosted every single time but one. That’s where I work now
Remember when Jack Palance did push ups at the Oscars in 1992, after talking about hiring older actors?
It seems obvious that with some seed money, they should create a production company for older actors and actresses, as well as crew members. Focus on lower budget film with more emphasis on screenplay, acting, live original music, matte sound effects, creative indoor sets and lighting, etc., instead of really expensive young ‘A’ list actors, CGI, pop music, and other budget killers.
That’s a trade off with high budget, high box office blockbusters; and low budget, but high margin movies.
Back in the 1980s, Cannon Films, aka Golan-Globus films, cranked out dozens of bottom of the barrel movies, figuring that some would fall flat and go direct to video, some would break even, and if one in a dozen or two was a hit it would not only pay for the stinkers, but provide budgets for the next dozen or two.
This margin was so good, that it out performed most other studios. If a big studio invested $100m in a movie, it had to earn $150m or more to even break even. Just a few flubs and the studio itself was on the ropes.
He may be right, but he writes trash. He’s no Clancy or even Cussler.
