An Ohio cupcake saleswoman has been arrested after running a fraud by stealing a dead infant's identity for the last two decades.
Ava Virginia Misseldine, 49, was arrested on Thursday in Utah, where she'd moved from Ohio in the last year, according to an affidavit.
She was charged with using the dead child's name - Brie Bourgeois - to get a job, a pilot's license, a passport, college admission and $1.5million in COVID-19 bailout cash.
During her time in Ohio, she'd been praised for running the Koko Tea Salon & Bakery and was even featured on the Food Network's The Best Thing I Ever Ate.
But Misseldine continually changed her story and background for how she became a success.
Misseldine has apparently gone by that name and lived a double life since at least 2003, three years after she was released from prison for theft, forgery and an escape attempt.
When speaking to the Columbus Dispatch in 2013, she said her family had been in the tea business for generations.
In 2014, however, she said she was a former cancer researcher who hailed from Hawaii.
Russell Misseldine, a relative of Ava's, told The Daily Beast from his home in the Cleveland suburbs that Ava was not from Hawaii, nor was she involved in cancer research, nor were her family ever in the tea business.
Both a Brie Bourgeois and Ava Misseldine are on public record as having attended Ohio State University in Columbus.
The real Brie Bourgeois died in 1997 according to Ohio public records.
Under the phony name, she obtained a state ID, social security card and driver's license, providing a copy of Bourgeois' birth certificate and their parents' real names.

According to the cemetery marker plaque pictured in the article, Brie died in 1979, which makes much more sense, as the infant’s birth certificate was used.
That’s going to happen when the government just throws money up in the wind.

In Utah she would blend right in.
PPP = massive fraud. If it is done by the government, it will be done wrong and there will be massive fraud, theft and graft.

I actually came across someone who used the same strategy to create a fake identity. She was the captain of the yacht on which my wife and I married. If I hadn’t brought my own minister, this woman would have married us. Other’s who got married on that company’s boats were concerned that their marriage licenses would be invalidated.
This woman was the co-owner of the yacht chartering business and was caught when she applied to renew her US passport. She was wanted as a person of interest in the murder of her husband in California almost two decades before. She and the other owner “Captain John” moved from California to the greater Houston area. Currently the woman is in federal prison while “Captain John” died in a nursing home from Alzheimer’s disease.
I didn’t think that using a dead childs birth certificate would still work. When you show up with it the clerk nver checks if there is a death certificate.

There was a time, not so long ago, that I would have read this story as one of depraved criminality.
Today, however, I read it as an adventure story, and admire her devious mind and chutzpah, and am disappointed in myself that I lack the same qualities.
Why should only our elite masters get to loot the now corrupt government??

If she was a private flight attendant for a co in OH, I know which one it was. Any flight crews anywhere in the USA will get fingerprinted and an FBI background check is done - going back 10 years minimum plus a credit check is done and a criminal background check.
How in the HECK did she get through that???!!!
