In a video released Sunday, June 12, former Southern Baptist Convention President Jack Graham endorsed current presidential candidate Tom Ascol — a move shocking to some convention insiders and a potential game-changer in this week’s contest for leadership.
Ascol and Graham hold divergent theological views, with Ascol being a staunch Calvinist and Graham being a more traditional conservative evangelical. And by endorsing Ascol, who is a Florida pastor, Graham bypassed another candidate, Bart Barber, whose church is located 37 miles away from Graham’s.
Barber, pastor of First Baptist Church of Farmersville, Texas, is considered the institutionalist candidate in this year’s three-way presidential race. Ascol is considered a more far-right candidate. He has been critical of SBC leadership for years and is running on a theme of “change the direction,” claiming the SBC must be rescued from incipient liberalism and wokeness in its leadership.
... If elected, Ascol would be only the second Calvinist to serve as SBC president in modern times and by far the most strident Calvinist. Former SBC President J.D.

A Calvinist and not woke. I like it!
So you can have Calvanists and Arminians in the same fellowship?
Yep. My son is attending.
Motions and voting start tomorrow.
If a religious denomination doesn’t stand for something, it’ll stand for anything. Mine, Reform Judaism, has less spirituality than a yoga class.
In my smaller church body, the call or office seeks the man. We don’t have any politicking, which is a blessing.
If Ascol wins it was predestined
Son told me there may be another conservative candidate to emerge in a couple of days who he likes...but worried it will split the vote.
LOL
Where in the bible do they mention an "SBC President" and "annual meetings" to elect this church "office"? Certainly, the New Testament church knew NOTHING of this "President" title that the SBC invented out of thin air. This is what happens when churches follow the traditions of men instead of the Word --
Oh wait! You mean to say the SBC IS one of those "sola scriptura" protestant churches? Whoops! Nevermind.
Now, do as we say, not as we do!
>> Ascol would be only the second Calvinist to serve as SBC president in modern times and by far the most strident Calvinist <<
If he's such a hardcore Calvinist, he doesn't NEED to campaign for the job or rack up endorsements. God pre-ordained his election as SBC President from the beginning of time and humans have no say whatsoever in the matter.
>> He has been critical of SBC leadership for years and is running on a theme of “change the direction,” claiming the SBC must be rescued from incipient liberalism and wokeness in its leadership. “The role of the Southern Baptist Convention president is not just to make appointments but to influence from the pulpit the people in the pews all across the Southern Baptist Convention and to represent us well in the culture" <<
Apparently neither he nor Jack Graham have gotten the memo that the SBC is a "bottom-top" organization where the office of SBC President is "purely symbolic" and "powerless" and "only used for coordinating retreats and so on" and that "the vast majority of SBC members don't even know who the current president of the SBC is". Many FReepers have informed me of this "fact", despite articles like this CONTINUALLY arguing otherwise.
The progressives want to end autonomy of churches for a more centralized org. Hence the entire month before the SBC the media banged the drum about sex abuse.
No...not the right man for the job.
“If Ascol wins it was predestined”
Bump.
What if he loses? Predestination only flows uphill?
