The Saudi-backed LIV Golf tees off, and the PGA Tour quickly suspends 17 players

Even before it started, the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series reshaped the careers of several high-profile players, costing golfers such as Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson their relationships with the PGA Tour and some of their sponsors.

A reprisal had been expected from the PGA Tour — and immediately after the inaugural LIV tournament teed off on Thursday, the PGA issued sanctions against 17 players who defected to the new series.

The players "are suspended or otherwise no longer eligible to participate in PGA TOUR tournament play, including the Presidents Cup," PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said in a letter to tour members.

All this tearful violin playing for the scumbag Khashoggi, who was no “journalist” at all. He wrote a grand total of three op-ed pieces, which the CIA thought at the time were ghost-written by a Qatar-based Al Jazeera reporter. He was a rabid anti-Semite, former BFF with Bin Laden and supporter of Hamas and Hizbollah. He took on MBS and lost. No one should shed a single tear for him, nor should our foreign policy be altered in his name.

seems like the PGA will end up being the AAA golf feeder league when all the big names go to LIV.

This is “cancel” culture at it’s finest. If the LIV has the money they can kill the PGA pretty quickly.

Soon the Masters will be played in Williamsport, PA going head-to-head against the little league world series.

I’m guessing they’ll still keep the LPGA, so there is that. PGA golfers who can’t compete with the big boys of LIV can go tranny and play in the LPGA.

But there’s a difference between playing non-PGA events and being BANNED from PGA events. Top end players often pick and choose their non-majors (ie PGA events) to not be fatigued for the majors. And because the PGA doesn’t control the majors they have to have a cordial relationship with non-PGA events. And in the past that has extended to other tours, players can generally do European and Asian events. You see this most often with English golfers who are generally on the tour over there but also come over for PGA. But for whatever reason the PGA has decided the LIV is the exception. No cordial relationship there, anybody that signs onto the LIV can’t play in PGA events. But we know from the “Tiger bump” a lot of golf viewership is people wanting to see certain players, not really the event itself. You ban enough of these players people want to see ratings will bottom out.

PGA Tour comes across as very stuffy.....”But we have rules and we have tradition we must uphold!”

I personally believe the disruption / competition is good.

Also for anyone objecting, “but its the Saudi’s”, I would ask a question to PGA tour major sponsors such as BMW, IBM about their business in Saudi Arabia.

PGA is a monopoly.
Glad to see some name golfers walk away from them.
Competition necessary.

The PGA tour, as recently as February 2022, permitted PGA tour players to play in a tournament in Saudi Arabia. Not allowing these players to have an exception to play in England is extremely hypocritical.

Playing in other LIV tour events in the USA is a different situation.

I don’t know anyone who watches to see Michelson’s gafs, DJs stony stoic demeanor and trailing performance, or that last issue with most all the other 17 joining the LIV. PGA is not going to lose viewership over the loss of those guys.

Why are the Saudis doing this.

Little Dubai.

Little Dubai beat the stumblebum Saudis in golf as a business. They got themselves on the European PGA tour circuit (NOT a third league), and even have a Race To Dubai season long rankings and final play, as part of the European tour; and because of the agreements between the PGA and the European PGA. American PGA golfers can play in the Race to Dubai. The Saudis have watched thia and said to themselves - “look what that f,,,,ing litle Dubai has done”.

So the Saudis, trying not be outdone, are out buying golfers. They offered Tiger a billion and he turned them down. Good for him.

His career is effectively over and his legacy is the PGA so why bother given he already has millions.
