‘Slowpoke’ law leading to citations for some South Carolina drivers

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - As the 100 deadly days of summer moves forward, we wanted to take a look at how one recently passed state law is affecting drivers.

The ‘move right’ law, or as many call it the ‘slowpoke’ law.

“If you are traveling on a controlled access highway, you should stay out of the left hand lane unless you are passing or overtaking a car,” said Corporal Joe Hovis, with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

They need this law in Pennsylvania, and need to enforce it in NJ, particularly against drivers from Pennsylvania. They seem to have no idea how to use a multi-lane highway, and will sit in the left lane, not passing anyone, but blocking anyone else from doing so, for miles and miles. I see it all the time, and it is very, very often, drivers with PA plates.

If the flow of the freeway is limit +5, then yes. If you are going to pass, then do it and get out of the left lane. Florida has some of the worst drivers I have ever seen. Cars driving 2 abreast in the left lanes, so you have to pass on the right. When I taught my kids to drive the rule was “if you are ever passed on the right you should not be in the left.”

In parts of the country where there is more than enough traffic to fill all the lanes, it may not always make sense. Many highways in the NYC metro area are 3-4 or more lanes. In those cases the right lane absolute doesn’t work.

I recently took a road trip from the east coast of the US into Mexico at Nogales, AZ and down to Sinaloa, Mexico. Oklahoma has the worst problem with drivers trying to enforce speed limits in the left lane. They were worse than New Jersey drivers. Interestingly, left lane driving was not a thing in Mexico. Nobody was in that big of a hurry or something.

I don't know about this...

It's already stressful driving through South Carolina. The traffic cops are very efficient about the upper speed limit. Now they're going to apply that efficiency to driving too slowly also?

Exactly. It makes no sense to stay out of the left lane except for passing. The intent of this law is good, but in practice it doesn’t work.

I have found that in most urban areas, the far left lane is anything but the fast lane when there is heavy traffic. When I commuted in Seattle I often used the far right lane to speed way past the folks clogging up the “fast lane”. And when I moved to Kentucky I did the same thing on I-65. In fact, I drive all over the country and have tried that trick in cities I’ve never been in before - and had the same results.

It’s weird.

I95 through long stretches of SC is wholly inadequate for the existing traffic. I have spent many hours in stop and go traffic in the middle of nowhere SC. I’m not certain all of the traffic would fit in a single lane.

When traffic was light enough to have wolf packs (I got my license in 1970), I got to speed between wolf packs and thread my way through them on my way to the next one.

What do you mean no? If you can only do the speed limit in the fast lane, then you have no business on the road at all. Stay home. Stay out of everybody’s way.

German autobahns have a rule against slowpokes in the fast lane. If a car behind you flashes his high beams at you, you're required by law to move to the right.

It's also against the law for drivers to be passing on the right on the autobahn. I felt safer driving on the autobahn at speeds over 100 mph, than I do driving now.

I have fond memories of big beemers and benzes flashing their lights from a half mile behind me. If you blinked, you'd miss them going by at 150+ mph.

The problem is that slopokes both keep speeders from being able to speed - and get tickets - and, more importantly, slopokes inspire road rage. And in our current cultural/political environment, that is a big deal. I expect to see road rage shootings this summer.

One way of looking at is you shouldn’t give someone a chance to pass you on the right on a two-lane interstate.

I thought this was obvious, and already a law. Sad to see so many people posting here that think this should not be.

Why do they think they should occupy the left lane and tie people up, when they could get over to the right and drive slow if that’s what they want to do?

We drive on the right in this country. Why is it that some people insist on driving in the left lane on the interstate? It is simple: if people are trying to pass you, move to the right. What is so hard about that? My mother was a bit scared to drive on the highway, and would take the middle lane. I had to explain to her that if people were passing her on both sides she needed to move to the right. She was afraid trucks would “run over her”. They won’t.

Yeah. I would try that a lot when I drove in Seattle area (flashing my headlights). People there consider it rude.

Washington state drivers are notorious for camping out in the passing lane. We were coming back from a wedding in Billings Montana about 18 years ago and, with a few other cars, were averaging about 90 MPH on I-90. Cars would always politely pull out of our way and let us by if they were in the passing lane. Well, all but four. We ended up passing them on the right.

Three of them had Washington plates.

It is not a fast lane.
It is a passing lane.
If you are not passing traffic, you have no business being there.

50 years ago I went through drivers training.
It was taught then.
It is still in effect now.

Correct. I drive on Texas freeways an awful lot as well. And if I’m doing 75 and 80 in the fast lane and someone is behind me wanting to go even faster? I move over and let them go. Only if I’m able to get past slower traffic in the right lane in five seconds or less.

I love passing semis on the right. I KNOW it really pisses them off. But if I can do it, they are to blame.
