‘Slowpoke’ law leading to citations for some South Carolina drivers

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - As the 100 deadly days of summer moves forward, we wanted to take a look at how one recently passed state law is affecting drivers.

The ‘move right’ law, or as many call it the ‘slowpoke’ law.

“If you are traveling on a controlled access highway, you should stay out of the left hand lane unless you are passing or overtaking a car,” said Corporal Joe Hovis, with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Now let’s talk about zippering-in when there is a lane closed on a road. lol

On our recent drive to Phoenix (from central Kentucky), in one state they had many signs in construction zones imploring people to wait to merge from a closing lane until you get to where the land separating stripe ends. I’ve actually told people that is where I always move over when a lane ends and they said that is how a$$holes do it. When I ask them “well, when SHOULD you pull in?” The response was similar to the response Matt Walsh got when he asked, “what is a woman?” 🤣

Florida roads are for the most part in very good condition, but slow drivers in the left lane is a real PITA down here. I think the word Boulevard comes from an old Seminole phrase meaning “heavily travelled pathway occupied by careless, clueless people that’s under perpetual reconstruction”🙄😖

Yup. That’s how I do it. Set a pace and stick with it. The slow ones drop off and the fast ones zip by. Before long you have the road to yourself.

Darwinism is people driving 20-30 miles over the limit. Its a passing lane. Not the Autobahn

Left,Lane for Passing Only
Friend of mine has a beautiful 1968 GTO. It has a custom made front plate that says in backwards lettering "slower traffic keep right" 😃

Yes if you are clogging up traffic. And it also reveals one to be an idiot to spend two entire minutes inching by a few semi-trucks exposed to blowouts, lane changes where he didn’t see you, load shifts, things breaking off etc... all because you cant wick it up another 5 to 10 over the limit for a moment to get to a safer place.

If you can’t do that, you have no business on an interstate.

.

He says the intent of the bill is to make space for first responders if needed, ease congestion and road rage, if possible.

If me passing traffic at 75mph while you sit behind me desiring to pass traffic at 85mph gives you road rage, I'd be happy to beat your ass on the right shoulder.

“It’s also against the law for drivers to be passing on the right on the autobahn. I felt safer driving on the autobahn at speeds over 100 mph, than I do driving now.”

Exactly. It’s one of the rare things Germans do to perfection. See someone coming from behind faster, you move right because you KNOW nobody is in your blind spot. The guy coming from behind KNOWS what you are going to do. It’s truly an automotive ballet.

The two huge German sins... passing on the right, and refusing to move right. It has to be experienced.

Part of the problem is caused directly by the police. Police cars used to have a flashing light on the t=roof and maybe two more in the back window. Now, they have 20 or more red and blue strobe lights, seeming wherever they can possibly put them.

The eye is naturally drawn to light, like a fly to a flame. A driver who’s tired, distracted, toasted or otherwise may actually drive into the police car. Where I live, it’s not uncommon for 4-5 units to be on the highway for a traffic stop. I’ve had times at night where I’m actually completely blinded to anything but red and blue strobes as I drove.

A friend owns a company that supplies strobes for emergency units. He has confirmed that there is some date to prove my theory and they are starting to rethink the vast number of strobes in favor of fewer for officer safety.

Lol.

IF I can move over, I will. Even if I’m doing 75.

But here in Texas, there usually is too much 65 mph traffic in the slow lane making a move over unpossible.

I’d have eventually passed that Prius on the shoulder, once there was room. I’d then probably have gotten in front of them and slowed them down below the speed of the trucks, allowing everyone else behind them to pass. I’ve done that before.

Well, speed does kill, but actually quite rarely, depending on the amount of alcohol involved.😎

I have to admit I’ve been amazed by how many stops I’ve seen with multiple cop cars. I used to get pulled over an average of three times a year. There was NEVER more than one cop car involved. Well, there was this one time west of Chicago, but that was a very unique situation. They thought they had a drug dealer before I even pulled over...

In fact it is now a law here in Texas that you are required to move over when emergency vehicles are stopped on the shoulder.

snipI honestly see no need to change lanes (always relatively dangerous in traffic) when passing a car on the side of the road. However, I also think you should put the phone down so you don't hit said car.

A correct reading of the law is "Move over OR slow down".
Having several million miles behind me as an 'large car' driver and having multiple opportunities to converse with various State patrol officers. I asked about that and what the advice was as to the amount to slow down. I was told 15 mph below the posted speed.

So to all driving below the posted speed with traffic overtaking you, do not pull into the left lane and block traffic. Just slow down that little bit. Most all of vehicles today have sufficient power to regain their speeds quickly with the push of the resume button. Cripes, you'd think these 500 hp trucks were powered by an old 671 Detroit with manual throttles and transmissions.

If I’m going ten faster than the lane I’m passing, I’ll not pull over at all until the situation changes.

I once got the attention of about 8 police cars.

Me and a friend were breaking into a church one evening after work.

Well, we were there to replace a broken window at our church and he forgot his key, so we backed up the car to the broken window, removed the glass and as he was crawling in, seemingly the entire department converged from several directions.

We explained out way out of it.

I’ve intentionally avoided the “slow down” part because, first, how slow is “slow down”, legally speaking. And, second, I’ve seen trucker videos where a car slows down only to be SEVERELY rear ended by the vehicle behind them.

That is, I consider slowing down to be even MORE dangerous.

The key to safety is all the cars in a lane going roughly the same speed and no dramatic moves.

I was mainly referring to the 52 mph governed motor vehicles being overtaken at 75 mph when they suddenly think they need to be out of that lane necessitating an emergency braking on the part by an 84 thousand pound rig. Asinine!

I told you what the troopers said, check for yourself.
