Over the past two centuries its magnetic strength has taken a nosedive, and nobody has the foggiest idea why.
At the same time, a concerning soft-spot in the field called the South Atlantic Anomaly has blistered over the Atlantic ocean, and has already proven problematic for delicate circuitry on orbital satellites.
Both of these troubling observations fuel concerns that we might be seeing signs of an imminent reconfiguration that would turn the compass points all topsy-turvy in what's known as a magnetic pole reversal.
But researchers behind a new investigation modelling the planet's magnetic field in the recent past warn that we shouldn't be too hasty in assuming that's going to happen.
"Based on similarities with the recreated anomalies, we predict that the South Atlantic Anomaly will probably disappear within the next 300 years, and that Earth is not heading towards a polarity reversal," says geologist Andreas Nilsson from Lund University in Sweden.

i didnt know polish people were magnetic- I do know that they are flip-floppers though- so yeah, they won’t flip
Nah!
What you’ve got are contrarians trying to cover both bases.
Will it? or Won’t it?
They did this play when that whole 70s “global cooling” thing was shown to have gone awry by the 80s.
See, these “scientists” are aware how often their group is wrong about things, so way not cut and jibe and possibly pick up some serious fame, grant money and mojo when all the other “scientists” are shown to be wrong—again!?
That’s the Jesuit way, take credit for the win no matter which way things go.
Suspiciousobservers.org says the “flip” is still on and over due. They mention the phenomena in the article is different.
I think this needs peer review
ha ha ha SO TRUE!
I routinely buy those super strong magnets in order to pull the pole closer to my house. The incoming particles will power the ionic weapons I have at the ready.
Bwah hah hah!!!
I wouldn’t trust modern scientist if they said the sun was going to rise in the east.
This is good news. Now we won’t have all the “climate changers” spending billions of taxpayer dollars trying to move all the penguins to the North Pole and the polar bears to the south pole.
Advanced Catastrophism classes here. Better be hanging on.

Notice the acceleration since 1994.
And the South magnetic pole has left the Antarctic continent.

But, I'm sure nothing is really going on.

the word ‘probably’ is very convincing ..
Drivel
The magnetic north pole was quickly headed south but it took a right turn towards Russia.
Hey, Laz! You might not be doomed after all!
No, I’m doomed.

That is what I have been going by, tha the reversal is overdue. But then, the 8.0 magnitude earthquake in San Francisco is overdue as well, and that hasn’t happened yet. So who knows? Averages are only averages and outliers can be vastly different.
Indeed, and especially since 2000. Magnetic north is just leaping toward Russia. That much change in so short a time has to be changing ocean and wind currents in some way that would cause unusual climate in much of the world. It has to.
I definitely agree. Some generation on earth is really going to be in for it. Nature will not be denied.
The thing to remember is that opposites attract. That north arrow on your compass is really the south pole of its magnet.
