CNA spoke to Ravichandran Tharumalingam after his successful summit attempt on May 5. He described the achievement as a way to “conquer old demons”.
The then-42-year-old was so keenly focused on summiting Mount Everest for the second time in two years that his euphoria distracted him from a slight tingling sensation in his fingers. He had successfully reached the mountain's peak for the first time in 2006.
Ravichandran or Ravi as he prefers to be called, eventually reached the top of the world’s highest mountain once more, but this time at a cost. The tips of eight of his fingers had to be later amputated due to frostbite.
“I believe it was something to do with (prioritising) desire over being rational. I was so desperate to prove a point, I was pushing myself too much that I ignored the pain in my fingers,” he recounted.

Yeah...
I need my fingers.
His life would be much better if he lost about 8 letters from his first and last names on his next trip to the top of Mount Everest.
omG!!!!! 🤣
Ahh, the great outdoors!
It always brings a tear to my eyes when I hear if anyone with enough money to climb Everest 3 times and loses the tips of his fingers. /s
Highest garbage dump in the world.
Mt. Everest has been turned into a corpse strewn garbage dump. Less dead bodies and trash on K2.
This story bothers me, but I can’t quite put my finger on it.
“I’m all thumbs.”
There is a Dallas doctor who dang near died up there. He lost a few fingers and toes. He’s either retired or dead by now.
I was on an expedition to Cho Oyu, about 20 miles west of Everest. No trash. Definitely some bodies that have never been found.
I wonder how long until that place gets cleaned up? I bet never. Looks like a liberal hangout for sure.
I get enormous joy and satisfaction joy out of many simpler, far safer things in life.
But that’s just me.
I’d be lost without my middle finger.
I get your sentiment. :)
I dont have a problem with folks doing tough challenges and using their own money. I just know the risks of this particular challenge and i wouldnt risk fingers, toes, death, to say i made it to the top of Everest. I cant do what I need to do to live everyday without fully working fingers or some kind of permanent disability from it. Other people depend on me as well.
From “Into Thin Air”:
“As an avid student of mountaineering history, I knew that Everest had killed more than 130 people since the British first visited the mountain in 1921—approximately one death for every four climbers who’d reached the summit…”
Bad odds, but given enough time and money, man will always find a way to harm, maim, or kill himself.
8 down and 12 to go.
