At least one person has died in a fiery accident involving eight semis and three passenger cars on Interstate-30 in Arkansas.
Arkansas Department of Transportation says there are multiple drivers injured, but have not specified how many or the extent of their injuries. Arkansas State police said there were 'fatalities.'
The eastbound lanes of I-30 remain closed and backed up for miles approaching the carnage. Traffic is moving on slowly in the westbound lanes, and traffic is being diverted off the highway.
Arkansas DOT is distributing food and water to drivers stranded on the interstate, and authorities are turning traffic around to clear the scene.
The accident occurred on Wednesday afternoon on a stretch of highway in Hot Springs County, near Malvern.
It remains unclear what caused the accident.
A representative for Arkansas DOT said it would be a long time before the highway traffic clears.

I call some of those interstate corridors “In The Trench On The Death Star”...
The only highway worse than that one in Arkansas is I-40 between Little Rock and Memphis. I had several near-death experiences.
Hillary Clinton: “See, I told you. AR-15s are not necessary.”
I believe there was rainy weather in Arkansas today. I wonder if that was a factor?
I avoid interstate highways as much as possible. Just in the last month alone I went from San Antonio to Dallas and back. And then from San Antonio to Houston and back. IH 35 and IH 10.
I tried to do most of my traveling on US 281 and Highway 90. I used to have nerves of steel, but anymore speeding down interstates at 85 to 90 miles an hour in traffic is just not fun. Not fun.
Huge storm covered most of Oklahoma, tracked east right across Arkansas.
Your theory on possible cause of the crash has credibility.
I am pretty sure that over 100 Americans die in motor vehicle accidents every day (on average). Many Americans bob around helplessly like a leaf in a stream, just waiting for the media to tell them which horrible story du jour (out of the thousands available - 9,000 Americans die each day) that they are supposed to emote about. You don’t have to play along. You can’t care about everyone all at once, except in a very generic, non-specific sense. You don’t have to spend even a moment thinking about a crash in Arkansas or a massacre in Africa or ... a war in Ukraine. The further away from your own immediate community you are focused, it is probably just an excuse for inaction in your circle, where you can make a difference. Why not skip the Ukraine flag or Free Tibet sticker and instead help someone you actually know. Anyway, that’s my post- evening cocktail two cents FWIW. Peace out.
I agree.
Don’t blame the rain. Blame the idiot that caused it.
I have been living in this area for almost a year. There is only a thin layer of topsoil (silt) overlaying impermeable bedrock. When it rains there is nowhere for the water to go. Flash flooding and the resulting hydroplaning makes driving here in rain dangerous. Folks passing by on the interstate probably aren’t aware.
Campers get surprised as well with pretty little creeks that turn into ugly swift water. This spring has been very wet for us. Bad storms passed through today on top of already saturated soil. Bad combination..
