I'm in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago and looking for a reputable body shop to paint my Toyota 4Runner. She's got some surface rust on single-stage paint that I would like to handle before it turns cancerous.

I'd like to give my business to a smaller place and avoid a dealership; and not just because of the cost, although I do know the dealer will rake me over the coals.

Jimmy Olson’s, on Lake Avenue in Woodstock. They’re pretty much almost closed down because the street has been blocked off west of the shop (road construction until October). So approach from the east.

It’s probably a bit of a drive for you since Woodstock is WAY out in the far NW suburbs. But their situation means they can get you in right away, and they’ll give you a good price. They need the business.

Tell the girl at the front desk that a friend of yours on the Internet lives in Woodstock and recommended Jimmy Olson for autobody work.

Since you didn’t say what year your Toyota is I assume it’s more than five years old. Plenty of Toyotas that age on the road. But my FRiend the fact is that the upper Midwest is a rust making machine and you may need to face the fact that your Toyota is in great operational condition, but most likely the body is goner or will be will be shortly. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve opened up panels on cars and found them completely riddled with holes even though the panel sounds solid.

Best of luck in your quest, but remember rust hole is just something to throw money into.

Damn, you're making me laugh. The girl at the front desk is NOT named Lois Lane. There really is a Jimmy Olson repair shop on Lake Avenue in Woodstock, Illinois. They have another shop in Harvard, Illinois but it only does mechanical work (no autobody or paint work).

However, way way back in the days when the earth was young, my nickname in college was "Clark." The first Superman movie with Christopher Reeve had just come out, and I looked a lot like him. I wore glasses with black plastic frames. I worked for the student newspaper. And I was pretty good at football too (defensive tackle, All-Conference), so when I took those glasses off, things happened.

The guy who gave me the nickname was a black running back who loved movies. His first name was "Kent." This was good for a lot of laughs at the kegger parties.

Man, I can’t afford to get out. I’ve been saving for more than a decade, and now because of Biden my savings has lost about 30% of its value. My husband isn’t fairing much better when it comes to putting away, because he isn’t making much on top of the bills, taxes, and (mostly) a car payment. I’m on a fixed income due to myriad of health problems I’ve had since I was a kid, worsened by the ‘Vid shot.

Yep. That was a bad decision. I bowed to pressure when I shouldn’t have. My nephrologist is a great doc, but he got really bad info from the FDA and CDC.

If you want to sponsor us, I’d be happy to accept. (Kidding. But not really.) We were lookong to move down near my brother in Texas, but everything close (within an hours’ drive) to the good hospitals is WAY out of our price range.

Yeah, it’s a 1999. I’d do it on my own with my dad and husband, but we literally have nowhere to do it.

I wish I knew why they thought it was a good idea to do single-stage paint...

Thanks, everyone. I’ll do some calling around and make some appointments, and see who is the best fit for the job.

I’m going to try to keep her for as long as possible. She was a southern car before she made it to me 5 years ago, and was totally rust-free. Mechanically, she’s the most reliable thing I’ve ever owned, and I plan to do whatever I can to save her.

wet sand it with 600 grit wet sandpaper, tape it off, and spray clear coat on it...

“patina” is the in thing nowadays...
