I thought it would be fun.
That’s what I told my friend Mack when I asked her to drive with me from New Orleans to Chicago and back in an electric car.
I’d made long road trips before, surviving popped tires, blown headlights and shredded wheel-well liners in my 2008 Volkswagen Jetta. I figured driving the brand-new Kia EV6 I’d rented would be a piece of cake.
If, that is, the public-charging infrastructure cooperated. We wouldn’t be the first to test it. Sales of pure and hybrid plug-ins doubled in the U.S. last year to 656,866—over 4% of the total market, according to database EV-volumes. More than half of car buyers say they want their next car to be an EV, according to recent Ernst & Young Global Ltd. data.
By the Numbers
Our reporter’s four-day, three-night EV road trip included many charging stops, little sleep—and less junk food than you might expect
• Miles driven: 2,013
• Number of charges: 14
• Total charging cost: $175
• Hours spent waiting to charge:18
• Hours of sleep:16
• Calories of junk food consumed (estimated): 1,465
• Giant chicken statues passed: 1
Oh—and we aimed to make the 2,000-mile trip in just under four days so Mack could make her Thursday-afternoon shift as a restaurant server.
Less money, more time
Given our battery range of up to 310 miles, I plotted a meticulous route, splitting our days into four chunks of roughly 7½-hours each. We’d need to charge once or twice each day and plug in near our hotel overnight.
The PlugShare app—a user-generated map of public chargers—showed thousands of charging options between New Orleans and Chicago. But most were classified as Level 2, requiring around 8 hours for a full charge.

JD_ is a battery head. I halve (or double) every stat he gives, similarly never/always = sometimes. Right next door = who knows how far away or even where.
The article author is correct. If you don’t have a charging station pretty much everywhere and you’re not in & out in under 5 minutes, who wants it?
The writer should have tried one of those newfangled gasoline powered cars.... 😁
They aren’t because EVs will be for people after the population is lowered.
Not everyone will be allowed a car and maybe they won’t even be “owned”.
It is hard to adjust the mind to the fact we are never going back and all of us aren’t going forward.
All of these new things will be subject to your personal social credit and banking score.
This may not happen but it probably will because we aren’t doing anything to stop it.
And what's the resale value of such car after the battery life comes close to its end?
I’ve postulated similar.
They want to force the working class onto buses and trains.
Commercial flights will no longer be available except for the very rich and connected.
Around town, I would use one. For frequent highway, overnight trips…I am not ready to make that leap.
It means, “There ya go…”
One other reason I don't support the EV cult, though, viz. because it's what the liberals want.
take your hourly rate, times the hours waiting, and add THAT to the cost of the trip...

Tesla are the roll Royse of the field. There will. Be the work a day ones
$16,000 for a new drivetrain? Come on, man....
That’s great ... Plus Musk will figure this out. Thanks for sharing the link.

You’re right. Also I support nuclear power and AI...
Remember those $1,500 computers that opened with a little blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner? And were out of date 7 months later? That’s why young people should buy electric cars - flaws and all - so they can be made better over time. We did our part.
ive certainly done my part- but nope on the electric cars- i put my time in helping ‘perfect’ gasoline cars (The money spent on them has been outrageous) I’ll stick with gasoline- electric grids are already overwhelmed as it is- it will be unworkable when they mandate all electric vehicles-
Yes this is a drinking forum no question of that
Names Charlie not Francis
Three pints is ..06 with five percent beer
I don’t drink I’ve witnessed the destruction as folks age and their drinking doesn’t age with them
Rd later.
Of course you WOULDN'T, but if you look at your map, you will see that a HUGE portion of the country is isolated and unpopulated to the extent that there are NO places to stop, much less charge. But your car can't go there, so you are limited to the areas you cite.
Will solar panels ever be wonderful they can be incorporated into the roof of the car? A ‘charge up while driving’... and garages with ‘sun room’ benefits?
