Union claims Starbucks illegally closing cafe to retaliate, Bloomberg reports (Real reason - bad grease trap)

The workers union at Starbucks is claiming the coffee chain is shutting down a recently unionized cafe in retaliation for its activist efforts.

It’s the latest escalation between a rapidly growing national labor movement and the coffee giant.

Workers United, the union that’s backing organizing efforts at Starbucks, said in a Friday filing with the National Labor Relations Board that Starbucks is violating federal labor law by permanently closing an Ithaca, New York, store. The group alleged it was in retaliation since employees at the location voted to unionize in April.

The Ithica store employees say they originally went on strike for unsafe working conditions on Apr. 16. Workers walked out due to a waste emergency caused by the overflowing grease trap, according to the union’s statement. In an email to the union’s bargaining committee, Starbucks cited the grease trap as the reason for the store closure.

The union committee alleges that Starbucks closed the store in retaliation for activity protected by federal labor law and to stop workers elsewhere from organizing. “It is a clear attempt to scare workers across the country by retaliating against its own employees,” the committee said in a statement.

Starbucks said that it opens and closes stores “as a regular part” of its operations. “Our goal is to ensure that every partner is supported in their individual situation, and we have immediate opportunities available in the market,” a Starbucks spokesperson said in an email to CNBC.

, Starbucks cited the grease trap as the reason for the store closure.

The grease trap is the cause of the union strike and the business closing.

Lets ban grease traps.

I’ll just say this...I’ve probably been in forty-odd Starbucks over the past decade (counting airports in the mix), and there were two or three in particular (in NYC) that were fairly ratty/rundown. I suspect if you graded conditions at all of them....ten-percent would be places that ought to be shutdown or renovated.

I’d also suggest that in Europe...most coffee shops offer superior coffee at a lesser price...so Starbucks is at a disadvantage with a lot of people.

“How does someone ‘illegally’ close a store? “

The fact it is considered ‘illegal’ to close a business in certain circumstances helps explain why we’re no longer king of the hill.

And should help EVERYONE understand who no conservative should ever be pro-union (perhaps with the exception of certain law enforcement agencies).

No. Hell no.

No teachers Union, no public sector unions at all. Period. That includes LEOs. Sorry, but not sorry. Unions have no worthy function today. They are strong arm factions of the Democrat party.

...that’s why I said ‘perhaps’ and ‘certain’. I do like the way Border Patrol union actually wants to be able to do their job, though.

"Starbucks isn’t even in the running for good coffee."

As I sit here drinking my starbucks french roast that I buy bagged
whole bean at the local safeway, I'm inclined to disagree.

Best french roast ever and less than forty cents per eight ounce cup.

Directive 10-289----specifically *Point Two*

"In the name of the general welfare, to protect the people's security, to achieve full equality and total stability, it is decreed for the duration of the national emergency that:

Point One. All workers, wage earners and employees of any kind whatsoever shall henceforth be attached to their jobs and shall not leave nor be dismissed nor change employment, under penalty of a term in jail. The penalty shall be determined by the Unification Board, such Board to be appointed by the Bureau of Economic Planning and National Resources. All persons reaching the age of twenty-one shall report to the Unification Board, which shall assign them to where, in its opinion, their services will best serve the interests of the nation.
Point Two. All industrial, commercial, manufacturing and business establishments of any nature whatsoever shall henceforth remain in operation, and the owners of such establishments shall not quit nor leave nor retire, nor close, sell or transfer their business, under penalty of the nationalization of their establishment and of any and all of their property.
Point Three. All patents and copyrights, pertaining to any devices, inventions, formulas, processes and works of any nature whatsoever, shall be turned over to the nation as a patriotic emergency gift by means of Gift Certificates to be signed voluntarily by the owners of all such patents and copyrights. The Unification Board shall then license the use of such patents and copyrights to all applicants, equally and without discrimination, for the purpose of eliminating monopolistic practices, discarding obsolete products and making the best available to the whole nation. No trademarks, brand names or copyrighted titles shall be used. Every formerly patented product shall be known by a new name and sold by all manufacturers under the same name, such name to be selected by the Unification Board. All private trademarks and brand names are hereby abolished.
Point Four. No new devices, inventions, products, or goods of any nature whatsoever, not now on the market, shall be produced, invented, manufactured or sold after the date of this directive. The Office of Patents and Copyrights is hereby suspended.
Point Five. Every establishment, concern, corporation or person engaged in production of any nature whatsoever shall henceforth produce the same amount of goods per year as it, they or he produced during the Basic Year, no more and no less. The year to be known as the Basic or Yardstick Year is to be the year ending on the date of this directive. Over or under production shall be fined, such fines to be determined by the Unification Board.
Point Six. Every person of any age, sex, class or income, shall henceforth spend the same amount of money on the purchase of goods per year as he or she spent during the Basic Year, no more and no less. Over or under purchasing shall be fined, such fines to be determined by the Unification Board.
Point Seven. All wages, prices, salaries, dividends, profits, interest rates and forms of income of any nature whatsoever, shall be frozen at their present figures, as of the date of this directive.
Point Eight. All cases arising from and rules not specifically provided for in this directive, shall be settled and determined by the Unification Board, whose decisions will be final.

The typical union response of “that’s not my job” is probably the reason for the fouled grease trap. If a diligent employee took it upon himself to clean it the shop steward would have come down on him for adding a task to their job description.

Starbucks cited the grease trap as the reason for the store closure.

So they're going to either tear down the building or at a minimum sell the building and stick someone else with the repairs to avoid a few hours of nasty plumbing? Sorry, they shut down one restaurant to kill the local union as a warning to other locations. I might not like the law, but you can't do that.

According to “Zippia”, these are the benefits provided to Starbucks workers...very generous for a coffee shop worker, and not surprising given the left wing politics of Starbucks leadership. Actual wages vary by state/city. Efforts to unionize are yet another reminder that no good deed goes unpunished, and the fact that workers tend to be 100% ignorant of the costs of running a business.

STARBUCKS BENEFITS PACKAGE

The company offers many of the common benefits that come with a full-time professional position. Some of the benefits that Starbucks extends to its employees include:

Medical, dental, and vision health coverage

401(k) retirement plan and discounted stock options

Paid vacation and sick days

One of the major benefits that attract talented staff to their team is their policies surrounding the arrival of a new child. Starbucks provides their team members with paid parental leave to bond with their newest family members.

In addition to parental leave, the Starbucks benefits package also includes up to $10,000 in family expansion reimbursement, which can assist with the costs of adoption, surrogacy, or Intrauterine Insemination for eligible partners.

Starbucks also provides some more unique benefits that employees might be eligible for. For example, Starbucks offers their employees the opportunity to study at Arizona State University’s online program with 100% of their tuition covered for a bachelor’s degree. This benefit can go towards several different fields of study.

The company provides commuter expense benefits, which take care of work-related expenses by providing transit passes funded by pre-tax payroll deductions.

Another huge benefit that Starbucks staff can rely on is their partner assistance program called Caring Unites Partners Fund or CUP for short. This fund supports assistance for eligible partners in the event of a financial crisis resulting from an illness, death in the family, natural disaster, or any other extreme scenario.

Unionize at your own risk. These youngsters have no knowledge about what happened in the 30s when unionization was popular. This is one of the responses, close down.
