Record-high meat prices are having a chilling effect on summer-grilling demand in the US
With costs for ground beef and chicken breasts at all-time highs, consumers have few alternatives to switch to different proteins -- so some may skip them entirely.
The US Memorial Day holiday on Monday is considered the unofficial opening of the outdoor grilling season, and the surging costs are pointing to a disappointing start. Price pain in meat comes after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine stalled crop exports in the Black Sea, pushing up the costs of animal feed. Even prices for propane used to power grills have soared.
“The inflationary environment is starting to take its toll,” said Michael Nepveux, senior analyst for animal protein at Stable USA, which offers risk-management tools for some commodities. ‘‘Instead of steak or chicken, we might have pasta or a pizza.’’

1. Catch and cook iguanas which are all around us in South Florida.
2. Catch and cook invasive Muscovy ducks which are also all around us down here.
3. Go crabbing.
My problem with option #1 is I have a mental repulsion to Iguanas and don't know if I can overcome it.
My problem with option #2 is I have been feeding the ducks in the lake out back and sort of look upon them as pets and I have trouble eating an animal I considered sort of a pet.
The best solution appears to be option #3 since I have done crabbing before and am now considering going back to it. Just tie a lite to a chicken leg, toss in the water, when crab tugs just gently pull in the line until you bag the crab with a pole net.
A Kroger’s regional manager told me a few weeks ago that a sale like that was a loss leader for them and their cost was closer to $10/lb.
Do people eat or not eat burgers over the weekend for a 50 or 75 cent increase?
Put the chicken in one of those big crab catch cages.
Hmmm…I’m going to a burgers and dogs cookout tomorrow. The hosts are providing the burgers and hot dogs and we guests are bringing sides and frosty adult beverages.

“Real grillers” are going to be in hog heaven later this summer. When the 20,000 head feed lot in Colorado finds out they can’t get feed or it cost double last year’s they will liquidate everything. Feast, then famine, all in a couple of months. Who could have believed this in America?
Best rotisserie chicken out there. I make a Costco run every 3 months or so. Never pass them up.
Pizza here as well.
We have cut buying any high priced meats. Can’t afford it on SS.
I just bought ribeyes for $8.50 per pound.
Canada Geese better be watching behind them
You have done a beautiful thing.
Omg yahoo we don’t like your tone, as for me I got brats, tri tip, corn potatoes, cabbage, all for weekend. Ya cost is up but leftovers will last a few more days. Plus I picked up a nice grinder to make my own burgers etc.
It’s 80 something here. Roadkill on black asphalt comes precooked.
Bonus?
Wow nice
Ebt card will cover the top shelf stuff provided they have the money to cover it
The local butcher shop had wings on sale this week for $2.99lb. I loaded up and after four wing-meals in a row I’m sick of them for a while.
You will overcome 1 and 2 when you are hungry enough.
July 4th would be busier, families grab a pizza to take while watching the fireworks!!
