The fish in South Florida are on drugs, and while that might bring an initial chuckle, it’s really not a laughing matter at all.
It’s rather alarming, in fact.
Because, according to reports, a new study out of the Sunshine State found “dozens of pharmaceuticals” in the blood and tissue of the fish in the South Florida waters. Among the substances that reportedly showed up are valium, blood pressure meds and antidepressants.
“We found pharmaceuticals everywhere and there was no place where basically a fish could be unexposed to pharmaceuticals and that was a surprise,” Nick Castillo, a scientist with Florida International University and the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust said of the three-year study.
Ninety-three bonefish in South Florida were test, according to the report, and all 93 were found to have drugs in their system. And it wasn’t just one drug per fish. The report said that the average number of drugs found in each fish was seven, and that some of the bonefish even had as many as 16 different drugs in them.
The fish are reportedly ingesting the drugs through human waste, and Castillo said that the presence of the substances can change a fish’s behavior and reproduction patterns. Per the report, a big part of the problem is that Florida’s 4,000 waste treatment plants are not equipped to deal with the pharmaceuticals that humans excrete.
It’s a trend, along with other pollutions, that scientists say could cause us to lose the “very valuable ecosystems,” in the state.
Studies are now expected to also look at how eating the fish might affect humans.
At least they won’t get covid:-)

I’m going on 72 and I take no drugs, just some OTC supplements. My VA doctor thinks the same.
If they had taken that study right after spring break the drugs might have been different...and more of.

Yes, but the govt is still paying for them, I bet.

Forget the fish.
Humans are drinking water filled with the excreted drugs taken by other humans.
What are the quantities involved?
To what extent are those drugs responsible for the obvious collective psychosis currently being observed in the nation?
Why am I the only one asking these questions?
The great food shortage can’t be implemented, if fish and wild game fill the gap.
This is more than likely part of a climate fear campaign to scare people from eating the Earth’s bounty.
Valium in fresh fish? What’s the problem? I’m tired after a day offshore anyway.
I’m 73, and have lived on venison and fish all my life. Not quitting now.
Bingo - now with mass spectrometry the detection level is parts per several billion.
You can pretty much find ANYTHING you are looking for. Providing clickbait for those already cowering behind the curtains.
Most drugs are excreted after our liver has had a go at them. They are not the "active" drug but a metabolically altered form almost always with much less potency. Those do not hold up well to sunlight and salt water and all the microbes in the water and further degrade into non-bilogically active forms
As mentioned above we can detect them using amazingly powerful tools that can find one "part" per billion parts of the sample. Most drugs are effective in the milligrams / milliliter of blood. You have to eat a lot of tablets/capsules to reach that.
Our refuse treatment plants empty into large volumes of water (oceans, rivers, seas) leading to dilution down to that parts-per-billion distribution.
There may arise some substance, like mercury, that gets collected by small fish and then the big fish eat the little ones and now you have concerning levels of mercury in big fish like Swordfish. That is an exception not found in many other substances.
There’s bound to be mass shootings in schools of fish.
What is not said is the level being detected. Trace amount are not enough to affect anyone. You need theraputic levels to have an effect.
I’m 77 and take only a daily multi-vitamin. Doctor doesn’t say anything because I don’t go to the doctor.

Lol. That’s the safest course of action. If you don’t go you can’t be put on 15 different medications.
Though with red flag laws coming up forced psychiatric drugging will probably be mandated by law again.
There is a joke in this article somewhere.
But what about the micro plastics!!!!!!

Grouper are the tastiest fish ever. But now, with viagra and all that other junk in their systems, they will undoubtedly taste terrible.
Or not.
The cause and effect could go either way. More people are on antidepressants because more of them are depressed or the other way around.
