The fish in South Florida are on drugs, and while that might bring an initial chuckle, it’s really not a laughing matter at all.
It’s rather alarming, in fact.
Because, according to reports, a new study out of the Sunshine State found “dozens of pharmaceuticals” in the blood and tissue of the fish in the South Florida waters. Among the substances that reportedly showed up are valium, blood pressure meds and antidepressants.
“We found pharmaceuticals everywhere and there was no place where basically a fish could be unexposed to pharmaceuticals and that was a surprise,” Nick Castillo, a scientist with Florida International University and the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust said of the three-year study.
Ninety-three bonefish in South Florida were test, according to the report, and all 93 were found to have drugs in their system. And it wasn’t just one drug per fish. The report said that the average number of drugs found in each fish was seven, and that some of the bonefish even had as many as 16 different drugs in them.
The fish are reportedly ingesting the drugs through human waste, and Castillo said that the presence of the substances can change a fish’s behavior and reproduction patterns. Per the report, a big part of the problem is that Florida’s 4,000 waste treatment plants are not equipped to deal with the pharmaceuticals that humans excrete.
It’s a trend, along with other pollutions, that scientists say could cause us to lose the “very valuable ecosystems,” in the state.
Studies are now expected to also look at how eating the fish might affect humans.
Something else to worry about. Probably have WD40 in their system too.
Something like 20% of the population is on these drugs now. The funny thing is that society is getting crazier not saner. But I guess it’s too hard to make the connection.
Surprised they do not have Heil Pfizer mRNA in them …
They will kill the planet in the name of saving it.
There’s something fishy about this.
I was hoping to go crackhead bass fishing this summer.
I’m hoping the grouper get a load of viagra.
Drugs have intentions no one knows about… a bit like invoking a demon on a Ouija board.
Only mere statistics make them FDA approved, they are a special “kind of science” that needs to prove nor describe what the compound does.
Bonus, you can steal natives’ plants and cactuses, forbid them from using them and then resell them with a huge patent fee the same under a pill format.
Science btch.
Fascinating. In the wide, wide ocean there is too high a level of pharmaceuticals. The obvious question -- and connection -- is this? How "too high a level" is finding its way into the wide, wide sea? And from whom?
Psychotropic drugs aplenty are being prescribed in ever increasing amounts and these are linked to the many outbreaks of violence, when "sad" and "confused" are TREATED by Big Pharma as solutions to problems they certainly seem to be exacerbating.
So many that it becomes measurable in the big wide sea....
Yep. Many many drugs are simply distilled folk remedies.
* needs NOT to prove nor describe what the compound does..
* Because Science btch.
So basically, Pre-’Pickled’ Herring? ;)
ick, it’s getting to the point where you can only eat farm raised fish.
Yep. The more prescription drugs we take, the sicker we get. If you’re one of those who isn’t on any prescribed meds, you know how surprised people are when this fact is mentioned. They can scarcely believe it, but they always offer congratulations.
I know. I’m 73 and take no drugs. My VA doctor thinks this is amazing.
Hope you aren’t going fishing anywhere near Malibu, California where Hunter lives. You could overdose from eating the fish out there.
Filtration with granular activated carbon, ozonation and other processes seem to be effective in removing much of pharmaceuticals from treated water. If water treatment plants don’t have the whole suite of filters, would be good for pharma companies to offer remediation.
If it’s in FL waters, you know it’s in a lot of other places.
Take two fish and call me in the morning...
