From the world’s largest gathering of hypocrites at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, we have learned that a personal carbon footprint tracker is in the works. In the wrong hands, it would be the equivalent of the ankle monitors used to ensure that criminal offenders don’t escape their house arrest.
“We’re developing, through technology, an ability for consumers to measure their whole carbon footprint,” J. Michael Evans, president of Alibaba Group USA, said Tuesday while on a panel discussion on responsible consumption. “What does that mean? Where they are traveling. How they are traveling. What are they eating. What they are consuming on the platform.”
This will excite the virtue signalers who will be happy to post their carbon footprint scores on social media. But for the rest of us, those still wishing to live freely, who don’t want elites establishing the limits of “responsible consumption,” it’s deeply troubling.
Evans described the tracker as if it were just another way for people to keep up with their activities – like a smart watch that monitors health.
But the existence of the technology plays straight into the hands of the wrong people, which in the developed world is roughly half of all elected officials and nearly all of the regulators and bureaucrats of the administrative state. Don’t think that they will decline the opportunity to someday require, in the name of saving the climate, each of us to have a carbon footprint tracker so that our lives can be monitored, and our behavior adjusted as needed.
Before anyone says we’re overreacting, that there’s no reason to be concerned, please consider this short list:
Yuval Noah Harari, a history professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, has said, in the words of the BBC, that “COVID-19 may bring (a) new surveillance era.” “Governments want to know not just where we go or who we meet, above all they want to know what is happening under our skin,” he said. A black box on automobiles that would be used to track mileage to determine how much drivers should pay for the roads in lieu of standardized fuel taxes “could lead to a very slippery slope of the government knowing our whereabouts at any given moment,” says the Pacific Research Institute’s Tim Anaya.
Everybody wants to rule the world...
All the ‘instruments’ in place in this country, for sure.

Basically every thing has a ruling ladder. Gov't, School, Church,
society, home, etc has a hierarchy that one must obey or follow.
The higher up the ladder the more power you have.
The push towards electronic vehicles is just one example.
If Leftists really cared about the environment, they wouldn't fly private jets, invest in companies that ostensibly harm the environment, own several mansions with enormous carbon footprints, or even purchase beach front housing.
That environmentalism all just blather for cover.
Once they force people into EV, three things happen:
Paranoid?
Perhaps.
But after what I have seen for the past 10-20 years in particular, there is nothing I will rule out anymore, most especially from the Left.
Regarding electric vehicles: The push is market driven with a political element.
Everybody and their brother is now producing electric vehicles and such cars are selling like hotcakes in China.
It is apparent that giants like GM and VW are not going to survive the onslaught. Ford may cease making cars and rely on the pickup for survival.
“So long as the people do not care to exercise their freedom, those who wish to tyrannize will do so; for tyrants are active and ardent, and will devote themselves in the name of any number of gods, religious and otherwise, to put shackles upon sleeping men.”
Voltaire, François Marie Arouet (1694-1778).
Its remarkable that this Evans guy spoke about tracking average people like it would be something they should be fine with. No ethical concerns whatsoever.
“The Elites Have Every Intention Of Controlling Our Lives”
You can call it Socialism or Communism or Global Government it is always the same. The elites live in luxury while the plebes live in the elites’ garbage cans.
It would help if we had elected representatives fighting for our freedom, but they don’t. There is no party we can turn to to defend conservative values, beliefs or principles.
We have no “army” in the field.
I would agree with your post, and add that it is no surprise they are selling in China where you cannot travel from province to province without permission.
As for the “The push is market driven with a political element” I would say that smacks of fascism as the Chinese Communists run their economy. Communism and Fascism have common core principles in some respects, and are ideologically closer than people think. It has been long known that fascists can be easily converted to communists, and vice versa. This was well known to both the Germans and the Russians.
Make no mistake our government is of, by and for the elites.
KTF / KTA
My observations indicate that the Chinese economy is in process of change. There is or was a large capitalist element that is being completely purged.
The intended result is stated by President Xi to be China Socialism. I have not seen a definition of that term but can’t associate it with fascism. The communists are creating and expanding corporate entities that are not the communist entities of the past or the immediate present.
The process has been seriously interrupted by Covid lockdowns of tens of millions in several cities
and they’ll end up with Benito Mussolini/Nicolae Ceaușescu treatment
I think the “carbon footprint” of each elite needs to be published as well. Selfish hypocrites.
the elites are more interested in ENDING the lives of a lot of “useless people” to preserve the earth’s resources for themselves. when they get control there will be a controlled culling of the human herd.
Mark of the beast coming ping
Fascism is government control and direction of industry, is it not?
General Robert Spalding (Ret.) author of the excellent book “Stealth War: How China Took Over While America’s Elite Slept” said that China is amongst the most predatory and brutal capitalist countries around...as long as you fall in line with what the CCP wants.
That is, at the levels where it doesn’t impact their wants and needs, you can steal, sabotage, and ruin your competition in any way you wish, and can defraud, even poison customers, all as long as it doesn’t interfere with what the CCP plans or needs in any way.
But if you run a factory, you are doing so at the direction and oversight of the CCP. Every industry and company has CCP commissars in it to make sure.
